'Do whatever floats your boat!'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

No excuses for being late now! The Belfry Bell has been refurbished with the installation of a brand new clock on the outside tower. The bell strikes on the hour between 7am and midnight, and once on the half hour.

Back in the '40s Russel Lang (39-43) spent many hours practising the organ at Merchiston.  Russel's love for music and the organ continued and when he was in a position to do so he bought his very own Conn 650 home organ.  Click here to watch a video of Russel playing his organ in 2006 and to read some of his Merchiston memories.

Did anyone spot Andy Thoms (59-63) on TV again last week?  The Majestic Line featured on "Cruising with Jane Macdonald", and attracted over 1.6m viewers.  It was great to see Andy on his bagpipes continuing his pipe band journey, which also began here at Merchiston.

Joining the kite surfing fraternity, I heard this week that Lewis Deaves (01-09) is running a kite surfing business in Dubai called Kite Zone.  What an exhilarating working day he must have!  Check it out here.

A reminder that the Headmaster and Mrs Hunter invite you to join them for a drinks reception in Dubai, on Friday 17 March.  They are visiting to meet with prospective parents. If you would like to join them please do let me know

One of the School's new gazebos (sponsored by Gilson Gray) was pitched outside and looked gloriously white, the test run certainly went well!  I look forward to seeing it up again on Sunday 12 March. Will you be visiting the School to watch the Sevens?

The School's careers convention will take place on Tuesday, thanks to all of you who have offered your support. I look forward to seeing you in the Dining Hall at 4pm.

I am delighted to announce the date for the Class of '87's 30 year reunion as Saturday 7 October.  Get the date in your diaries now gentlemen.  Details to follow, but I can confirm it is going to be a fantastic night!

To those who arrived at the School in '60 and '61, plans for your reunion are coming together nicely. Thanks to those who have confirmed their attendance and sent payment. If you have any questions about the get together feel free to give me a ring on 0131 312 2262.

Kind regards
