"Do Not Pass Go - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

After a busy weekend full of Merchistonian events, we bring you updates from the Annual Dinner, Remembrance Service and other Merchistonian news from the community.

Merchistonian Annual Dinner

Last Friday we were delighted to hold the 2018 Merchistonian Annual Dinner at La P'tite Folie who provided some fantastic food in a great venue.

The Merchistonian Award was presented by Club President Matthew Gray (79-85) to Nick Blair (School Chaplain) on behalf of the 178 fallen Merchistonians from WW1.

The Merchistonian Club was delighted to have speeches from Fergus Crawley (10-14) who spoke on Men's health and his World Record attempt in December, Jonathan Anderson (School Headmaster) who gave an update on the School as well as an invite back to Merchiston, and Chris Gray (75-81) who closed the evening by praising Matthew's tenure as Club President.

Matthew himself gave various speeches throughout the evening and was the perfect Master of Ceremonies for what was a wonderful celebration of all things Merchistonian!

Merchiston Tower Remembrance Service

On Saturday 10 December the School were invited to Napier University to conduct a Remembrance Service at the site of Merchiston Tower. This would have been the very place that all of the Merchistonians who fought during WW1 would have attended and we are grateful to Napier University who allowed us to hold this poignant service marking 100 years since the end of WW1.

Class of 2008 Reunion

It was great to welcome back the Class of '08 for their 10 year reunion. On Saturday morning after watching the match against George Watson's, the group had a tour of the School and relived some old memories. Later on in the evening they enjoyed the hospitality of Tigerlily, with a meal and some (many) drinks.

Monopoly - Edinburgh Edition

Merchiston Castle School features on the recently released Edinburgh Edition of Monopoly and to celebrate, the School had a visit from Mr Monopoly himself! Sitting alongside George Watson's College and University of Edinburgh, you could own Merchiston Castle School for a cool ?300 and you can get your copy of the Edinburgh Edition here.

Remembrance Service

The 2018 Remembrance Service was a remarkable event, with many Merchistonians getting in touch giving positive reviews of the day. Gareth Baird (70-75) summed up the feeling from most of those who mailed in after the service "I would like to thank you all for the extraordinary Remembrance Service which we were privileged to attend at Merchiston. My mum, brother Roger (73-78), wife Kirsty and I were all enormously proud that Merchiston and its wider community could stage such an event attended by an astonishing number of people"

We have a short photo gallery of the 100 pipers and drummers march and a full video of the march can be seen here. We're also touched to have received an account of the day from Hugh Dinwoodie (43-48) who took part in the 100 pipers and drummers parade and his recollection of the day can be read here.

Scottish Touch & Sporting Start

Current teacher Freddie Main is raising money and awareness for the 'Sporting Start' charity.

Senior School Rankings - Golf

The School is pleased to announce that it has risen from #5 to #2 in the ISGA National Senior School rankings whilst also remaining in #2 position in the UK Junior School rankings.

Alan Murdoch of the Golf Academy said "I am delighted with our current results, the boys have trained hard and competed well on what has been a very busy season for our squads. Our Merchiston Senior A team is now through to the final of the National match play competition and now awaits the winner of the other semi....Merchiston B team against High School of Glasgow!"

Doddie Gump

Ian Fraser (96-02) has been in touch about this great event:

The March of 1000 Headbands in Rome was fantastic. Makes you wonder what we can achieve at a home game. As luck would have it, the Lord Provost has kindly closed off the Royal Mile for us to gather before the match against South Africa. This time we have over 10,000 new improved tartan headbands to shift, raising funds for My Name5 Doddie Foundation and the battle against MND.

Doddie should be at the MERCAT CROSS at 2.15pm on 17th November. Why not be there too.

Rugby Camp 2019

The 2019 Rugby Camp details have been released, the camps will be led by Roddy Deans (Director of Rugby and former Scotland u16 Head Coach) and David Blair (Assistant Director of Rugby, who played with Scotland A, Edinburgh and Sale Sharks).

That's all for this week's newsletter.

As always, we hope you have enjoyed reading and if you have any stories of your own, please do get in touch!
