'Scottish Success for Merchistonians'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

It was a pleasure to start off my day at Indigo Yard at this morning's Business Breakfast. Barry Wingate (85-90), director of global banking at HSBC Investment Bank in London, flew back from Singapore to give a talk on the future for the oil industry.  If you have a business or an interest that you would like to present at a future Business Breakfast please let me know. The breakfasts will resume at the start of the Autumn Term.

The Scotland U20's squad returned on Sunday 22nd May from their 10 day high altitude training camp in Font Romeu. Hugh Fraser (12-14) and Cameron Gray (13-15) finished their week with a warm up fixture against France U20's. Soon they will leave for Manchester where they will have a further warm up game with Japan prior to their first World Cup Fixture on Tuesday 7th June against Australia U20's.

Fantastic news in rugby with Scotland claiming the World Sevens Series title with a victory over South Africa in the London Sevens final last weekend.  The Scots were trailing 26-15 with 30 seconds left but Edinburgh wing Dougie Fife scored twice to clinch a thrilling 27-26 win. With this being the first time for the Scots to win the London Sevens Cup it is a wonderful achievement for both Magnus Bradbury (11-13) and James Johnstone (02-08) who were instrumental to the game.

Will this be the year that MRFC take home the winning trophy? Make sure you are there to give them a cheer when they take on the Edinburgh Academicals next Saturday. Doors open from 12, at Raeburn Place. Following the day's events, the Merchistonians and Edinburgh Academicals are jointly holding an 'old school' themed dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel, Edinburgh. With some tickets left, it is not too late to book a table or a ticket.

A reminder for the Class of '06 to book up for your ten year reunion. Simon Collins (00-06) has arranged for you all to get together over a meal at The New Club on Friday 7 October.  To save your spot click here.

Ken Fisher (80-86) is also arranging a reunion for his peers. Class of '86 can you believe it has been 30 years since you stepped outside the School grounds? Please get in touch with Ken to confirm your place.

The annual Merchistonian Dinner is taking place on Friday 11 November. Make sure you make a note in your diary as you will not want to miss out when the occasion arrives.

A fun date for your diary is the Rocks and Reels evening that is held in the Marquee at the School on Saturday 25 June. An opportunity to relax in the company of family and friends, listen to some of our talented Rock Musicians and take part in some Scottish Reels. The live music on the night will include Bwani Junction (comprised of 4 Merchistonians) as well as the School's own rock bands. To book a ticket or table please click here.

We have two upcoming events in the golfing world. On Sunday 19 June the Merchistonian golf team will take on the School. I think the team may need as much support as possible against the talented youths. The match is taking place at Muirfield, if you would like any further information or are interested in becoming a member of the Golf Club please get in touch with Robert Forman (89-94). Also, Michael Ferndale (86-92)  is putting together a team of Merchistonians to compete in the London Scottish School Golf Society match at Denham Golf Course on Sunday 26 June. If you would like to dust off your clubs and represent Merchiston please let Michael know.

Merchistonians will be saddened to learn of the deaths of Alexander Wood (55-60) and Mark Lunn (80-85). Further details can be found here.
