Dear Merchistonians and Friends

The Anthony Nolan Trust

Sandy Jennings (06-13) was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disorder called Aplastic Anaemia in April. Since this devastating diagnosis Sandy's parents, Fiona and Bruce, and brother, Euan (06-15), have been raising awareness of the desperate need for blood and bone marrow donors. Today, the Anthony Nolan Trust joined the Sixth Form pupils at assembly.

Anthony Nolan will be returning next Friday to register anyone wishing to become a donor. If you are aged between 16 and 30 and this interests you, please let me know. If you are over 30 and interested in signing up, you can do so here.

Merchistonians and careers

Ethan Hemmati (11-16) regularly contributes to one of Sheffield's local papers, The Forge. Ethan recently reviewed Leonard Cohen's album "you want it darker" and wrote a tribute to Leonard Cohen which was published last week. You can view Ethan's work here.

Congratulations to Bo Zhao (15-17) who has started a new job at 'UnionPay International'.

The 2016 Merchiston Careers Convention brought together representatives of over twenty employers covering a diverse range of careers areas. I hope that we can support the pupils in the same way next year.  The next convention takes place on 7 March 2017, please let me know if you can help.

Merchistonian Events

The pre-Calcutta Cup Dinner will take place on Friday 10 March 2017; to register your interest please let me know. The venue is yet to be confirmed.

Business Breakfast

It is great to see enthusiastic pupils join us at our monthly Edinburgh Business Breakfasts.  Last month, Arman, came along to listen to Graeme Crossley's (95-99) presentation on search engine optimisation. Arman looks forward to meeting more of you at breakfasts next year and has agreed to write up a summary after each event. Read Arman's article .

Merchiston is honoured to be announced as the winner of the Scottish Schools' Red Conference for the second consecutive year.  For a full update, click here.

Ticket requests for 6 Nations closed in October however we have had some Scotland v Ireland tickets returned, please email Louise here if you are interested. This is also a final reminder to those who have yet to send payment.

The 1XV and U16 teams competed in the Cup semi-final this week - the atmosphere at the School was vibrant.  You can see the results here.

Kind regards,

Gill Imrie
