"Locked and loaded - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

In this week's newsletter we have international caps, international doctors and other Merchistonian news from around the world.

Welcoming the Intake of '57 Reunion

This weekend we welcome Peter Macdonald (57-62) and the Intake of '57 for their 60 year reunion. The group will join current pupils for lunch in the Dining Hall, followed by a tour of the School.

International Shooting Cap

Merchistonian Tom Diggle (08-16) was representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Federation Cup and we have a short report of how he got on.

"I was selected to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Federation Cup (European Division), last weekend, which was held in Northern Ireland. I shot well on the first day finishing in 3rd overall in prone with a score of 617.6. On the second day I shot a new PB of 1129 in the Three position competition (3P), ranking me again in 3rd. Overall I was very happy to receive my first 2 caps for Scotland at a senior event."

Peace Pipes

Commemorating the 100 year anniversary of World War 1.

James, a current pupil, is helping the School mark the end of the national commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1 in November 2018.

A keen piper from the age of 10, James would like to amass a group of 100 pipers and drummers, past and present pupils of Merchiston, to play and parade on Remembrance Sunday 2018. "I thought it would be a fitting way to remember all those who fought and died", James says "We still have the pipes my great-great-Uncle Duncan McNaughton played while serving with a Scottish Regiment in the War. If this happens, I plan to have the pipes re-furbished and would proudly play them on that day".

We have almost reached 100 pipers and drummers but are still looking for Merchistonians to join us on Sunday 11 November.

Thank you to all those who have already signed up. If you are interested, please do get in touch merchistonians@merchiston.co.uk

Business Breakfast

Today Peter Macdonald (57-62) gave a presentation on Australian Doctors International and the work they carry out in Papua New Guinea. The talk was an incredible insight into the difficulties faced whilst developing medicine in one of the remotest places in the world. For more information on Australian Doctors International click here.

Merchistonian Squash

Andy Duff (76-79)
is organising a squash tournament against Watsonians on Thursday 25 October at 6.30pm at Colinton Castle Squash Club.

There are a few places left to complete the team, with a curry planned afterwards. Anyone interested, please contact Andy here

Can you spare 10 minutes to help the School with their website design and usability?

It has been a busy start to the academic year for the School, as they celebrated excellent examination results and welcomed the new Headmaster (look out for an interview with him in the forthcoming Merchistonian Club Magazine).

An excellent school should have a good understanding of its audiences' views. Merchiston regularly consults the wider community to obtain their feedback and the School is seeking opinions on its website to help shape the look and feel for the future.

Can you spare 10 minutes to complete this survey? The responses to the questions will be used for planning purposes only and will be anonymised; the School will not automatically collect your information. There is an opportunity to opt-in and supply contact details at the end of the survey should you be interested in helping with further research on this topic.

Charity Dinner at Dundas Castle

David Broadfoot (65-70) is organising a charity dinner at Dundas Castle, South Queensferry  on Wednesday 10 October to raise funds for the final restoration of Pluscarden Abbey, an active Benedictine Monastry near Elgin, in Moray. David says he is happy to offer Merchistonians tickets at half price (£75.00 instead of £150.00) if you are interested please email David Broadfoot.

An Officer and a Gentle Dram

Merchistonian Charlie MacLean (65-69), seen here in The Scotsman with what is expected to be a record breaking whisky sale.

He was elected a Keeper of the Quaich  in 1992 for 'his services to Scotch over many years' and granted the rare honour of being elected Master of the Quaich, the industry's highest accolade, in October 2009.

A video report featuring Charlie can also be seen here.

2018 Merchistonian Annual Dinner

This event offers the chance to catch up with old friends, greet new faces and celebrate together as Merchistonians.

Friday 9 November from 7.00pm at La P'tite Folie Edinburgh.

Kick the weekend off with drinks at Indigo Yard and an informal Merchistonian dinner. Rally up your friends, it is about time for a get-together!

"La P'tite Folie is a lively and charmingly cosy place to enjoy great, traditional French cuisine. Located in the midst of Edinburgh's West End, this delightful venue offers authentic French dining in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere."

Newcastle Golf and Drinks

Join us on Friday 26 October. Back for our second year of Golf followed by a meal and a night on the Town, for those with the stamina.

We are starting at The Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a very popular venue last year. It will be an earlier start of 10.00am for bacon butties and coffee, with tee off at 11.00am.

As the course takes approximately four and a half to five hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High Street for dinner, meeting at the Italian restaurant San Lorenzo at 6.00pm. The dinner is open to all Merchistonians, so those who are unable to make the golf can come along and have a great Merchistonian night.

Book your place for golf, dinner or drinks and for those of us who can, all three.

Rugby 6 Nations Tickets

The deadline on applications for the 2019 Six Nations matches is Monday 15 October, if you haven't received details or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch on the details below.

That's all for this week's newsletter, thanks for reading.
As always, we'd love to hear from you so please get in touch!

Best wishes
