We start with hearty Merchistonian congratulations to Fraser Brown (01-07) and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) for their selection as part of the Scotland Rugby World Cup squad and to Duncan Hodge (86-92) Scotland Assistant Coach who will take on the role of Edinburgh Rugby Backs coach at the end of the Rugby World Cup 2015.
In golfing news, which you may have missed over the summer, Calum Hill (11-13) not only gained a place at the Scottish Open at Gullane but was also asked to submit a daily column for the Scotsman on his experiences during the week. You can read his account here.
Murray Naysmith (13-14) represented Scotland in the Toyota World Junior Golf Tournament in Japan where the team finished 11th out of 15, and he finished 32nd out of 60 in the Individual standings. From there he went to Finland for the European Youths Matchplay Team Championship where Scotland were beaten by England in the Semi Finals. With a damaged wrist he was forced to withdraw from the Scottish Amateur at Muirfield, but he recovered in time for the Home Internationals in Wales, which Scotland won and with Murray achieving four wins out of six matches.
David Clements (57-62) has also been in touch having just completed a long-planned adventure sailing round Ireland from his base in Dartmouth. He remembers the building of the School’s first sailing dinghy (a Graduate) in the basement of Gibson House but is wondering how many Merchistonian sailors there might be out on the water? If anyone is keen to meet up then please get in touch through the Club office. Start of a Merchistonian Sailing Club anyone?
And why not use the evening of the Merchiston Gala Ball on 2 October to meet up with other Merchistonians to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Merchistonian Club and to catch up with the latest plans for the School – It’s Time for Sport! The evening promises to be a fun-filled night that you wouldn’t want to miss! You can book your tickets by emailing here or calling the office. But if you cannot join us on the evening then perhaps you might be generous enough to donate something for our auction. Again, please call the Club office on 0131 312 2337.
Others may like to help the School in a different way by volunteering to meet some of the current boys at the careers speed dating event on 5 November. Or you could join them for one of the careers café events every other Tuesday. If you can share your career experiences since leaving School we would love to hear from you.
Talking of career experiences, Chris J S Young (99-05) shows us around his work at the Large Hadron Collider in Cern – watch him here.
Glenn Leslie (00-09) and Alex Kennedy (05-09) have committed to running the New York Marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and have set themselves a rigorous training regime to get them to peak marathon fitness. You can sponsor Glenn here.
If there are any Merchistonians who would like to share your tales of similar charitable endeavours, business success, sporting pastimes or personal updates then please email your news for us to include it in this year’s Merchistonian Club magazine.
