'Comings and Goings'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Prepping for House photo

The weather has been so unpredictable in Edinburgh this week that for the first time since 2003 House photographs had to be taken indoors, in the Memorial Hall. We caught the leavers taking a 'selfie' before their official photographs were taken.

On Sunday 24 April Merchiston Castle School was delighted to welcome back The Rt Rev Dr John Armes (69-74), Bishop of Edinburgh at the Commemoration Service.

This morning's Business Breakfast was well attended. The speaker, Colin Crabbe (64-69) gave us an interesting insight into the opportunities emerging from the Middle East. The next Business Breakfast will be 8am Friday 27 May at Indigo Yard where we will hear from Barry Wingate (85-90). As a Director in Global Banking at HSBC Investment Bank we are looking forward to his update on the Oilfield Services market. Our Business Breakfasts are a great opportunity for you to network and create business connections with the Merchiston community. Please do get in touch if you are interested in attending.

As you may have heard in previous emails or on social media, The Merchistonian Club released a whisky towards the end of March. The first half of the cask has been sold and production of the bottles, decanters, boxes and glassware has started. The remaining 130 will go soon, so if you would like to purchase the whisky please visit www.cask88.com. This is a one off single cask release and a portion of the funds will go towards the fundraising of the new sports centre. If you have any questions about the whisky please email patrick@cask88.com.

This year's MRFC v Edinburgh Accies match will take place on 4 June 2016. Tickets are now available for the 'old school' themed dinner that will follow the match. Have a look at the links on the right for more information.

Last weekend the Merchistonian Golf team enjoyed a 5-3 victory in a social match against Old Sedberghians at Muirfield. If golf is your cup of Tee (do you see what I did there?) why not sign up to become a member of the Golf Club? There are numerous social matches lined up to keep you busy throughout the year. To see more detailed results, fixtures or to find out more about signing up please click here.

Can anyone help a Merchistonian who is looking for a three bedroom property to rent in Glasgow? Please get in touch if you are able to assist.

I am delighted to be writing my very first Newsletter after joining The Merchistonian Club as Secretary and I am excited for what lies ahead. There are some fantastic events in our calendar over the next few months at which I look forward to meeting many of you. I would like to thank everyone that I have met so far for their kindness and warm welcome. If you get the opportunity please do pop into the office, drop me an email or give me a call. I have the exciting mission of creating this year's Club Magazine and I would love to hear all of your stories and news.

Kind regards

The Merchistonian Club
