"Who would walk 500 miles? - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

This week we have a look back at last week's reunion, fundraising and investment appeals, news of all the upcoming Merchistonian Events and other interesting articles for you to read.

Class of '88 Reunion

Thanks to the Class of '88 for visiting the School on Saturday for their reunion. They provided great support for the 1XV in their win against ESMS. Afterwards the group were taken for a tour of the School with current pupils and then sat down for lunch in the Dining Hall to round off their return after 30 years. We hope you all had a great weekend and have recovered well!

2018 Merchistonian Annual Dinner

This event offers the chance to catch up with old friends, greet new faces and celebrate together as Merchistonians.

Click here to book your ticket!

Friday 9 November from 7pm at La P'tite Folie Edinburgh.
What better weekend to be in Edinburgh?

Kick the weekend off with drinks at Indigo Yard and an informal Merchistonian dinner. Your dinner will take place at La P'tite Folie, a great new venue for the Merchistonian Dinner! Rally up your friends, it is about time for a get-together!
"La P'tite Folie is a lively and charmingly cosy place to enjoy great, traditional French cuisine. Located in the midst of Edinburgh's West End, this delightful venue offers authentic French dining in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere."

On Saturday 10 November Scotland will be taking on Fiji in the Autumn Internationals at Murrayfield.

Finish the weekend off by watching 100 Merchiston and Merchistonian Pipers and Drummers parade together at the School on Sunday 11 November.

Udrafter Investment

Daryll (08-10) & Luke Morrow (07-09) are seeking investment for their start-up business Udrafter (The University Draft). Udrafter is an on demand and real time student work experience platform where trusted businesses can post one off jobs or projects to be completed by skilled students within hours, even minutes.

Udrafter is disrupting the way businesses access student talent, and how students gain relevant work experience to prepare them for full time employment. They currently have one investor on board but they require one more as part of a co-investment for the business. Preferably they are seeking an individual who has invested in technology businesses before, and who would be able to provide industry connections and mentorship.

If anyone in the Merchistonian Club or Community thinks they may be able to help or would be able to provide any connections/referrals then please get in touch with Daryll here: daryll@udrafter.com. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Camino Walk Fundraising

Johnny Finnie (81-87) is in Spain walking the Camino de Santiago from southern France to Santiago in Galicia.

It's a walk of over 500 miles, which he is 80% of the way through - and he's doing it to raise money for Whiteleys Retreat in Ayr, a great cause which provides therapeutic short breaks for children, young people and their families with cancer and life altering illnesses in the UK.

Johnny is currently 3/4 of the way to hitting his target of £10,000. If you are interested in helping him reach his target, visit here for more details.

New Arrival

Congratulations to Angus Hinks (97-02) and his wife Jenny, who gave birth to their first child Archie Edward Hinks on 9 July 2018.

Donald Sprinck Remembered

Former music teacher Donald Sprinck (DBS) has been remembered fondly in this article in The Scotsman by Tom Peterkin, son of Bill Peterkin (55-60).

"On the staff was a dearly loved piano and organ teacher called Donald Sprinck. An unassuming man with a severe stammer, one might be forgiven for thinking he would not be a natural fit at a robust all-boys school. As a shy man wrestling with a speech impediment, the easy assumption would be that he would be ragged mercilessly by Philistine pupils. But Donald Sprinck was special. So much so that he was recognised by Merchiston boys at the time as a sensitive soul and, above all, a man with a sublime musical gift."

The full article can be read here.

Magazine Notices
The annual Merchistonian Club magazine is going to print soon and we would welcome your notices.

If you have any births, deaths, marriages or engagements to announce, please do get in touch with Jo Tennant at jtennant@merchiston.co.uk

The deadline for submissions is 24 September 2018 and there are also opportunities available for advertisements should you wish to do so.

Newcastle Golf and Drinks

We are back for our second year of golf followed by a meal and a night on the town, for those with the stamina, on Friday 26th October 2018.

We are starting at The Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a very popular venue last year. It will be an earlier start of 10.00am for bacon butties and coffee, with tee off at 11.00am.

As the course takes approximately four and a half to five hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High Street for dinner, meeting at the Italian restaurant San Lorenzo at 6.00pm. The dinner is open to all Merchistonians, so those who are unable to make the golf can come along and have a great Merchistonian night. After dinner we will make our way over to The County, also on Gosforth High Street, for further drinks and to continue the night of good company.

Book your place for golf, dinner or drinks and for those of us who can, all three

That's all for this week's newsletter, thanks for reading!
Best wishes

Dan, Merchistonian Club Secretary
