"Cup Success - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Last week brought news of International success and we're pleased to tell you this week's newsletter brings more of the same! Alongside cup wins, we also have sports news and a request to the Merchistonian community for help.

Schools Cup Final

The Scottish Schools Cup Final took place at Murrayfield on Wednesday evening, with Merchiston Castle School taking on St Aloysius' College. Both sides have won this cup five times and Merchiston were determined to win after losing the 2012 and 2014 finals.

It was great to see so many Merchistonians at Murrayfield cheering on the team and it contributed to a great atmosphere both inside and outside the stadium.

Merchiston took an early lead after three minutes and after some pressure from St Aloysius scored a perfect counter-attacking try to extend the lead to 14-0. The opposition managed to score a try of their own before the break to leave the score at 14-7 heading in to half time.
It must have been a stirring half time team-talk because the second half was dominated by Merchiston, scoring four unanswered tries to win the final 40-7.

Jamie Dobie (1XV Captain and School Captain) was interviewed after the match and had this to say: "Last night's victory was a very special occasion for everyone involved. The coaches, staff, parents and the wider Merchistonian community have supported the team massively over this season and last night was a chance for us to give something back.

The final score did not reflect the closer encounter we had, especially in the first half, but the determination and work-rate in the second half showed how much a cup win meant to us as a team. We have worked hard on and off the pitch for many years now and to finally get our hands on the trophy is wonderful. On behalf of the team I'd like to say a massive thank-you to everyone who has helped us to this point. For the coaches who put in hours of unseen work to help us out, parents, family and friends for supporting us throughout the season and giving us this opportunity as a group. Thank you to all the Merchistonian family for supporting us through any means and seeing the joy after ending 10 tough years was fantastic."

Squash Match

Andy Duff (76-79) and Peter Young (77-82) are currently trying to arrange a fixture against Stewart's Melville FP and are looking for squash players to take part, if you are interested in playing and want more details please do get in touch.

Thank you to Hammy McMillan (75-80) and Nigel Rickard (Deputy Head 01-12) who have been in touch to correct last week's newsletter. It was in fact Hammy McMillan (05-10) who was part of the Gold Medal winning Curling team and not his father who was captain of the GB Olympic team and a multiple European Championship winner.

Nigel adds "Hammy and Grant were the key members of the School team which won the Scottish Schools Cup in 2010."

It seems Curling success certainly runs in the family! Congratulations again to Hammy and Grant Hardie (05-10) on their fantastic win in Tallinn.

Alchohol Recovery Scotland

Bruce Rose (81-85) runs an organisation called Alcohol Recovery Scotland who work with both men and women who struggle with alcohol use disorder (AUD) or alcoholism to most. This can range from someone who drinks a small amount but their drinking is starting to get out of hand, right up to the chronic drinker and everyone in between. They work very closely with Scotland's leading addiction psychologist.

He adds "We run a programme here in Scotland that has a 78% success rate. Unfortunately the NHS offers us no funding due to the current economic climate and we therefore are forced to raise our funds privately."

Bruce is looking to the Merchistonian community for assistance or any connections to organisations who could help. He also mentions "We are keen to take on some corporate sponsors who would sponsor individuals to go through the programme i.e. ex-servicemen, a company staff package etc."

If you could help Bruce and want to get in touch, please email him here.
