Teapot Races and a Sad Farewell
This Sunday will see us sliding into June, the official midway month. Since 2014 is slipping through our fingers already, I thought to suggest some Edinburgh adventures for you all. You could pop along to the International Film Festival (18 - 29 June), or the Royal Highland Show (19 - 22). For any of you with young children or grandchildren, there’s also the Edinburgh Canal Festival and Raft Race (Saturday 21). If you’re international, there’s also World Blood Donor Day (Saturday 14), so why not make a difference?
On that topic, you may remember Richard Bent (76-81) appealing for support for his Edinburgh Marathon Relay run. You’ll be pleased to know that he and his teams have raised £4.5k so far for the Teapot Trust, who provide art therapy for children with chronic illnesses. Well done Richard!
Continuing with sport, Barclay Low (63-68) is acting as a volunteer for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which is sure to be a great experience. He’d like to know if any other Merchistonians are doing the same. If so, let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll get you in touch!
We were delighted to welcome back this week Neil McIntosh (60-65), who was the key speaker at this year’s Commemoration Day service. Where any of you there? A transcript of his delightful speech is available on the Headmaster's Headlines this week.
Our Edinburgh Business Breakfast this morning was, once again, a fantastic end to the month. Current parent Peter Nicholson got the audience really talking and it was great to see Merchistonians and parents engaged and sharing stories. Next month’s Breakfast is slightly different in that it will take place on THURSDAY 26 June, not Friday as usual. Graham Eden (71-73) will be discussing ‘Unsporting Penalties’. Keep your eyes peeled for more details.
I would now like to take this moment to sadly notify you of Wattie Yellowlees’ (31-36) passing. A much-loved man, he was one of our oldest Merchistonians. If any of you are in the area and would like to pay your respects, his family have informed us that his funeral will be at Aberfeldy Church on Wednesday 4 June at noon.
On that note, I wish you all well and have a lovely weekend.
