"Back to School"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

It was great to see you

Craig Wight (87-89) recently accepted an Associate Professor post at Edinburgh Napier University, just 10 minutes from the School. Being so close, Craig decided to pop by for a visit and take a stroll down memory lane with his father.

During the tour, we bumped into Mr Ogilvie-Jones,  Chalmers West Housemaster.  Craig reminisced about being woken up to an air raid siren blaring from the speakers and was amused to hear that today's pupils are awakened to the soundtrack of the Disney movie, Frozen.

Everything but the Speaker

We have a fantastic new venue (24 Royal Terrace) for our May business breakfast but we are still looking for a speaker.

What do you have to do?  Come along on the day and talk to a group of enthusiastic Merchistonians about your career, your company, a scheme you'd like to get off the ground, a project you have been working on, a charity you have been helping, a hobby which has turned in to something bigger…the floor is yours!

Affinity Discount

Another company on board!

10% off at 181 Delicatessen

Mike Billinghurst (85-90) and his wife, Charlotte, opened 181 Delicatessen in August 2014 in the smart retail-hub of Bruntsfield, after years of working in renowned establishments across the city. As well as selling homemade treats and quality continental deli products, they are successfully championing small, local producers. In the back of the shop they have a small café with tempting home baking and light meals. Bespoke hampers are available to order and outside catering is available by arrangement.

Team Mouat Take Home Bronze

Grant Hardie (05-10) and Hammy McMillan (04-10) took home bronze at the World Men's Curling Championship in Las Vegas. Well done Team Mouat! Read more here.

North Berwick 7s

Lots of great things have been happening with MFC; with a new committee, a new team kit, practising weekly and a new physio, Polly, the team are ready to take on Dunbar in their first match at the North Berwick 7s tomorrow! If you are in the area, go along to cheer them on.

MFC v Accies

This is going to be a fun event! Hopefully we will spoil the party for the Accies and win the game. If you're interested in taking part in the touch v Accies and Watsonians contact Jonny Elliott (92-98). If you're interested in playing Accies in the main fixture contact Matthew Clark (07-14). Otherwise, get Saturday 9 June in your diary to go along and support your team.

Beating Retreat Ceremony

On Wednesday 23 May the Combined Cadet Force is returning to the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle for the Beating of the Retreat ceremony.

Twelve Scottish schools will parade and play in a colourful pageant of military music and precision drill by the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Combined Cadet Force in Scotland. There will be an area for the public to enjoy the display, with the magnificent backdrop, so come along and join us from 7.45pm.

Back to the Beatles

Following two full house presentations last year, Iain Wright (60-65) is back by popular demand. Iain will be giving a 40 minute talk on The Beatles' development from their formation until after their formal breakup in 1970, and their subsequent lives.  This is interspersed with twenty minutes of extracts from their most successful songs.

Join Iain in the Colinton Bowling Club on Thursday 3 May at 8pm - doors and bar open from 7pm.  Tickets are free, but must be ordered in advance.

Donations are invited on the evening in Support of Mind Scotland, a mental health charity.  The two previous shows raised just over £400. Click here to get in touch with Iain to reserve your spot.

Rallying Around

After reading in the Headmaster's Headlines about Thomas in Fourth Form passing his BARS test, James McDiarmid (07-13) has been in touch to share his news.

"Rallying has been a sport that has been very close to my heart for several years. I have been lucky enough to drive a backed M-Sport Fiesta R2 in the British Rally Championship (The pinnacle of rallying in the UK) for the last 12 months and have signed to drive for the coming year. This is a championship that has taken up the length and breadth of the UK, Ireland and abroad onto the continent, racing and preparing cars. I am delighted to report on the last round of last season we managed to take our first ever class win! Looking further into the coming months we will be competing at the BRC rounds."

You can track the progress of James' team on their Facebook page

Merchistonians in Melrose

Brilliant to see three Merchistonians join Freddie Main, Director of MFC Rugby, at the Melrose 7s with the Crusaders last weekend. Josh Eagers (10-17), Benn Morris (09-16) and Aaron Tait (14-16), all played brilliantly for the Crusaders. Unfortunately, they lost to the Watsonians in the quarter final 21-12. Watsonians went on to win the tournament. The Crusaders RUFC is a charity rugby club, with teams scattered around the world, they raise awareness of male cancers by playing rugby and encouraging men to check themselves and seek advice early!

Your wish…our command

Richard Macmillan (81-87) got in touch to suggest as part of the new merchandise range we introduce Merchistonian knot cufflinks. I am delighted to say that with a little help from Frazor Murphy (77-83) these are now available for sale. Click here to get your pair and to check out the rest of the range.

U15 International 2018

An update from Alan Murdoch, Golf Academy Director -

"I had a fantastic weekend at Collingtree Park as Captain of the Scottish U15 School boys' team.  What a wonderful event it was and lovely to witness the camaraderie and friendship shown from both teams.

Although the score (11-6) suggests a one-sided affair, it was anything but! The match was very close with 5 games over the weekend all going to the last green. Small margins at this level was the difference, with the English boys just that bit sharper and more precise with their shots from close in.

A great experience for all the pupils."

If there are any Merchistonians who would like to share tales of charitable endeavours, business success, sporting pastimes or personal updates then please email your news for me to include in this year's Merchistonian Club magazine.

Best wishes

Gill, Merchistonian Club Secretary
