Worldwise Merchistonians

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Commiserations to the 7 Merchiston students who, this week, missed the National Final of the Geography Association's Worldwise Quiz by a single point. Was Geography one of your favoured subjects? Would you be able answer the question 'Which is the world's fourth largest island, whose capital city is Antananarivo?'

To Merchistonians around the world, can you help the Headmaster and Mrs Hunter in meeting prospective pupils? They set off on their travels early next week with a packed itinerary:

Dubai: 3, 4, 5 March (Reception at The Address Montgomerie, Emirates Hills - 4 March)
Singapore: 6, 7, 8 March (Reception in Hotel Fort Canning, 7 March)
Hong Kong: 9, 10 March (Reception in The China Club, 9 March)
Abu Dhabi: 11 March (Reception in the Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al-Beri)
Doha: 12 March (Reception in the Radisson Blu, Salwa Road, hosted by Gordon and Margaret Mackenzie, stalwart supporters of the School)

If you would like to join them, and haven't been in touch, please email so that we can send out a formal invitation. They would really appreciate your support. We can arrange personal appointments for any friends or colleagues who may have sons for whom they might wish to consider a Merchiston education. Simply put them in touch with us.

For those in the Edinburgh area, Richard Bent (76-81) is organising a lecture from Rick Spencer, Universal Studios Creative Manager. As well as visiting the School, he will be presenting 'New Markets and Creativity - a Universal Tradition!' on 19 March at 6pm at Queen Margaret University. Further details and booking here.

To golf: Sunday sees the dusting off of clubs for the annual spring outing of the Merchistonian Golf Club, 1130 at Gullane. For last minute takers, contact Rob Forman here. Forecast conditions might test your skills!

Last Saturday's annual Merchi v Accies golf match at Muirfield was a win for Merchiston, 5.5 to 1.5, full report to follow. Let's hope this bodes well for the second round meeting in the Halford Hewitt competition in April.

Last call for nominations for Merchistonian of the Year - details here.

London-based Merchistonians, why not join us at Boisdales at 7pm on Friday 13 March? It's the biennial, pre-Calcutta Cup gathering, a great chance to catch up with friends as well as enjoy a few thoughts from Frank Hadden. There are still a few seats left and you can book here.

Whilst on rugby, on this day in 1964 the Italian government asked for help in keeping the Leaning Tower of Pisa from toppling over. Come on Scotland, do the toppling this weekend!

Oh, and the answer to your Geography question - Madagascar!

Kind regards
