'How Time Flies'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Along with my month anniversary comes a reminder for our next Business Breakfast. On Friday 27 May we will be joined by speaker Barry Wingate (85-90) who will discuss aspects of the oilfield service market with a talk entitled 'Into the headwind. Where next for oil?' The precious commodity affects all our lives in some way so if you would like to join us from 8-9am at Indigo Yard, please let me know. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible.

It was a pleasure to welcome Alastair Burnet (59-62) and Bill Mitchell (60-63) back to the School on Wednesday. Both of whom were kind enough to give me a tour of the grounds and share their stories from when they were at School.  I enjoyed listening to their tales of mischief and the adventures they have embarked on since leaving. Alastair was returning to donate a double bass stool to the Music department, which we all know will be well used!

watch

Is this your watch?  Last weekend, metal detector in hand, Rev Nick Blair, discovered a real treasure in the grounds. After doing a little bit of detective work (the watch was etched with 'M A Gardner') we believe the owner to be Michael Gardner (76-81). If you are in touch with Michael, please let us know so that we can return the watch to its rightful owner. I wonder what other hidden treasures are out there!

Club social media followers will know that James Johnstone (02-08) started Sunday's Scotland v England game off with a bang at the Paris 7s. Thanks to his tries, McRae's men were able to take a 14-10 lead after just four minutes. Well done James!

It is not too late to join the East v West social golf match this Sunday in Gullane. Golfers of all abilities are welcome. Get in touch with Robert Forman (89-94) if you are keen to take part. Whether you are playing or supporting I hope that the sun shines for you. I shall update you on the match in due course.

The clock is ticking, there is not much time left to get your ticket for the annual MRFC v Edinburgh Accies after-match dinner. On Saturday 4 June there will be an 'old school' themed dinner at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Edinburgh, make sure you get your ticket now.

If you have not set up an Easyfundraising account yet now is the perfect time to do it. Whilst shopping online you can save up to 40% off your favourite brands at the same time as supporting the School's fundraising. Purchase through Easyfundraising and a donation from the company you are buying from will come directly to the School. It really is easy.

Stuck for something for your children to do this summer? The School runs a variety of sports activity camps, some are residential. Click here for more details.

It is always like to hear how your peers are getting on. Please do send over any hatches, matches or dispatches

That is me clocking off for now, so until next time gentlemen….
