Charles Samson (95-03)- 2011
Congratulations to Charles Samson (95-03) who has been picked to take charge of five matches during the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series.
Charles, who is a member of the Midlands Referees Society, was chosen by the IRB to officiate at the tournaments in Australia, Dubai, South Africa, Scotland and England.
Having played rugby since his School days at Merchiston, Charles became a referee after a back injury led to him being advised to avoid any contact sport for a year. From taking control of a second XV match at St Andrews University at the end of 2006 he has progressed through the ranks of Scottish Rugby's junior and senior referees' academies and has now controlled RBS Premier 1 matches as well as National 1 matches in England.
"It's going to be a great experience - it's certainly not very often that you are given this kind of opportunity. For the last two years I've been involved in officiating at the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s, firstly as a No 4 and then as an assistant referee," he said.
Samson has visited Australia on a back packer holiday in the past, taking in Melbourne and Sydney, so his next visit will be altogether different territory as he officiates at the first tournament on this season's HSBC Sevens World Series on Queensland's Gold Coast on 25 and 26 November.
Scottish Rugby Referees' Manager Roy McCombe said: "Congratulations to Charles. His appointment to these five international sevens tournaments is a reward for his hard work over the last five years and is indicative of the progress we are making through our academy structures in looking to develop the next generation of referees."
