'Success Unleashed'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

The sun has been shining in Edinburgh all week and it felt like summer was almost here. Today, however, I am reminded that we are in Scotland, the rain clouds have returned just in time for the weekend.

35 Year Reunion Dinner

As promised, an update on the reunion dinner of Class of '81 which took place last Friday. A great turn out, with 35 attending their 35 year reunion - anyone might think we planned it that way.  It was lovely to see Merchistonians travel from as far as South Africa and the USA to make the night. The biggest challenge of the night was trying to group the class together for the obligatory photograph... Can you spot the photobomb?  As I left the venue it looked like they were some way off the 'nursing home' yet.

The next reunion will be for the Class of '86 who plan to be at the MRFC v Watsonians match and dinner on Friday 2 September.  This will be followed by a lunch at The New Club on Saturday 3 September. Contact Ken Fisher (80-86) or respond to this email to let me know if you would like to join.

Simon Collins (00-06) is also organising a reunion for the Class of '06 on Friday 7 October. You can book your place for the dinner here.

We would like to congratulate Cameron Gray (13-15) who is making his first foray at U20 level joining U20 regular Hugh Fraser (12-14) in the Scotland World Cup Rugby Squad. Also to Zach Mercer (13-15) who has been selected to play for the U20's England World Cup Rugby Squad.

Frank Hadden has a few thoughts on the future of the game and how Merchiston can lead Scottish developments.  You can hear Frank's thoughts here

From sports success to business success, David Millard (91-98) along with business partner Jamie Doig introduced a bottled whisky blended cocktail. 'Orach' has already been snapped up by Aldi and is lining the shelves in time for blue skies and barbeque season. If you like an Old Fashioned or a Rob Roy, Orach is worth a try. The blended cocktails are available in two flavours: strawberry, vanilla and ginger beer or lemon, lime, mint and ginger beer. More information here
A date for your diary, if you are in Edinburgh is Friday 27 May. 'Into the headwind, where next for oil?' Barry Wingate (90), Director, Transport, Services and Infrastructure with HSBC's Investment Bank will highlight some of the issues on this important subject at our next Business Breakfast. Who knows he might even cover the implications of Brexit and our oil supply? It would be great to see you there, please let me know if you are able to attend.

Make sure you check out any upcoming Merchistonian events on the right. There are still some spots left for the East v West Golf Match on 22 May and tickets for the MRFC v Accies Dinner on 4 June. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Michael Ferndale (86-92) is putting a team together for London Scottish Schools Club Golf Match which takes place on 28 June 2016  in Denham. For some further information, please click here. If you are interested in joining the team, please email Michael Ferndale.

Stuck for something for your kids to do this summer? The School runs a variety of sports activity camps, some residential. Click here for more details.

We are always interested in hearing what you are up to, from graduations to new jobs, sporting honours to marriage. We would welcome submissions from you for publication both in the magazine and online.

That is all from me this week. As always keep sending your news over.
Have a lovely weekend!
