'Old School Blazer'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

With Half Term comes stillness to the School which yesterday was punctuated, by an avalanche of boys and girls from Bonaly Primary School who were here for their Sports Day, something that the School does every year for its neighbours.

Tomorrow is the day that we find out who will be taking home the winning trophy. Can the Merchistonians have their first win against the Academicals since the game recommenced three years ago? I look forward to seeing you there to support the young (and not so young) old boys. Kick off for the match at Raeburn Place is at 3pm and doors open from midday. There will be a bouncy castle and BBQ so whatever the result on the pitch it is a day for the whole family. Take a look at last year's footage.

There are still a few tickets left for the joint after-match dinner. The 'old school' themed night will kick off from 7pm at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Edinburgh. Tomorrow will be a day to remember with camaraderie and esprit de corps aplenty so get your ticket here before it really is too late.

Merchistonian cricket team

On this day in 1899 English cricket captain W.G.Grace became the first man to play Test cricket beyond the age of 50. Another record was broken on Tuesday when the current English cricket captain Alastair Cook became the youngest batsman in Test cricket to reach 10,000 runs. Showing that age is just a number, the Merchistonians took on and beat the School in their annual match on 20 May in a thrilling game. We won the match by 7 runs. There was a good representation from across the years and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, a great excuse for players, young and old, to come together. The match was followed by a meal in the beautiful WWI Centenary Pavilion.

The World Rugby U20 Championship kicks off on Tuesday with Scotland playing Australia and England taking on Italy. We will be especially proud of Zach Mercer (13-15), Cameron Gray (13-15) and Hugh Fraser (12-14) who will all be making their respective appearances.

Finally, June brings Father's Day (Sunday 19 June). If you are looking for a gift you might find something, as well as helping the School, if you buy through Easyfundraising.  No cost to you, funds to the School Sports Appeal - simple, and thank you.

Please keep the news coming. Have a lovely week and I look forward to meeting some more of you tomorrow.
