Bravery Through Fire

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Two weeks to go! The Annual Dinner fast approacheth and time is of the essence if you wish to attend. Gather up your table's stragglers and tell them to either book online here or give me a call. I look forward to seeing you there.

To rugby news: 1XV captain Dan (05-15) has been selected for the Scotland U20 training squad, which is a fantastic achievement. As you may recall from last week's newsletter, Magnus Bradbury (11-13) started for Edinburgh against Leinster on Friday. Unfortunately Leinster won 33 - 8, but an interview with a proud Magnus can still be found here.

The Scottish Schools Cup semi-finals take place at Murrayfield tomorrow, where our 1XV take on Stewart's Melville College; at the same time, Watson's is playing Strathallan - kick-off 2.30pm. To add to the boys' excitement, all four teams will be led out onto the main pitch at half-time during the Scotland v Argentina international - a remarkable experience, although probably less appealing for those on the losing sides!

Our team has done tremendously well and would welcome your support. If you're intending to head along to watch our boys, or the international match, this is a gentle reminder that these events are family-friendly. You are representing both the Club and the School, so this is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the high standards the School has in front of a passionate public. Do have a marvellous time and let's hope we reach the final!

Lastly, on this day in 1907, 25-year-old Jesùs Garcia, a Mexican railroad brakeman, found his train (filled with dynamite) on fire. The firebox's sparks had been catching the hay in the carriages' roofs. Without a second thought, Garcia drove the train full-speed, in reverse, downhill and 6km away before it exploded, killing him; but his deeds saved the population of an entire mining town. To this day, his name is celebrated in Mexico and a song, created in his honour, is here. What bravery will you demonstrate this week?

Enjoy this bright yet chilly weekend, gentlemen.

Kind regards
