'Congratulations, Careers and Calcutta'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Hello and happy New Year to you all, I hope that you are all off to a good start.

Most of you will have received your copy of The Merchistonian Club Magazine. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did putting it together.  You are a very interesting bunch and I look forward to hearing from you all over the course of the year.

2017 Events and Reunions

Come and join us at the Pre-Calcutta Cup Dinner at Mac & Wild on Friday 10 March for what is sure to be a great night. Tickets are £45 per head, which includes a three course meal and welcome cocktail. And so you don't miss out on any of the games, the Wales v Ireland match will be on the big screen too! Book now.

Are you in Edinburgh on Friday 20 January? Why not cheer on Edinburgh Rugby at their first home game at Myreside? Book your ticket here (see poster featuring Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11)).

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne

So far, I have been contacted by a representative from the Classes of '07, '97, '87 and the Intake of '60/'61 to help to organise your 2017 reunions. If you would like to arrange a reunion for your year please get in touch. Keep your eyes peeled for details of the reunions over the next month.

Congratulations to…

Further congratulations go to Gavin Reid (01-06) (who features in the magazine) as this week he has been crowned 'Yachtsman of the Year 2016'. What an impressive tale - if you have missed it you can read Gavin's story and watch his rescue mission here

Gavin Reid

Angus Flett (76-82) has recently become the CEO at Smart DCC, who run the UK's smart metering network. Good luck in your new role Angus!

Angus's son, Ben Flett (08-13), has recently graduated in Geology from the University of Southampton.  Ben is now doing an MSc in Coastal Engineering and his twin, Matthew (08-13), is in his last year at Durham completing his degree in Modern Languages.

It was great to see Zach Mercer (13-15) performing so well over the festive season.  Catch up on Zach's progress here.

Magnus Bradbury (11-13) has also had some good news, having been re-signed with Edinburgh Rugby on a three-year deal.

Merchistonian meet up

I always love to hear of Merchistonians meeting up around the world.  Hugh Dinwoodie (43-48) recently took the time to meet with his good school friend Roy Humble (44-48) when visiting his son in Calgary.

Can you help?

Could you help out at this year's Careers Convention on Tuesday 7 March at 4pm?  We are still looking for representatives in several sectors (click here to take a look).  If you would like to support the pupils and help them with their next stage please get in touch to let me know.

That is everything from me this week, gentlemen. If you have a story we could feature in this year's Club magazine please get in touch. Until next week!
