We are back for our
second year of Golf followed by a meal and a night
on the Town, for those with the stamina, on Friday
26th October 2018.
We are starting at The
Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a
very popular venue last year. It will be an
earlier start of 10:00am for bacon butties and

hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at
the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High

Visiting Iain Robertson
Having flown in from
Seattle to visit family, Iain popped in to the
School to see how much had changed in the 15 years
since he was last here. With a fondness of the
grounds, he was particularly delighted to see his
favourite tree still standing strong.
is a professor in Seattle and uses pictures of the
School grounds in his Landscape Architecture
course, so was pleased to be able to take new
photos to take back with him and compare the
changes that have been made.
Visiting Derwin Wong
Derwin was visiting from
China and brought with him, his wife and daughter
who were seeing the School for the first time.
Derwin had a wonderful time with many memories
flooding back; he particularly enjoyed visiting
his old house at Chalmers East and seeing just how
it had changed.
Columbian Sailing Reunion 2018
British Columbian Merchistonian Sailing Squadron
held its 2018 reunion at Maple Bay, Vancouver
Island on 28th May.

and Duggie Reid (58-62)
Chris's yacht the Sandpiper were delighted to
welcome back Charles Grant
who flew over from Scotland for
the event. Charles' skills in the galley were
sorely missed last year- his sausages with
marmalade and full English breakfasts are a
There is no doubt that
skipper Chris has mellowed with the years. Charles
and Duggie were so engrossed in conversation after
meeting up on the Vancouver ferry that Duggie
drove past the entrance to the rendezvous in
Chemainus. The pair were several miles down the
road on the way to Victoria before they realized
the folly of their ways and turned around! In view
of their tardiness they were expecting to be
greeted by an irate skipper with threats of extra
deck swabbing and stoppage of shore leave. However
Chris and David were delighted and a little
relieved to see them and the Sandpiper set sail
immediately for Maple
Bay. Jock (Guy) Warren
and his partner Karen had sailed
up from Friday Harbour in Washington State to join
the group. As usual they were accompanied by Meg,
their incredibly well behaved seagoing border
Sadly Peter Watson was unable
to make the meeting this year but we hope to see
him again in 2019.
The group enjoyed
reminiscing, exchanging photos and an excellent
dinner at the Maple Bay Marina and the following
morning Guy and Karen headed off north for several
weeks of cruising and the Sandpiper headed
The Sandpiper's sailing programme
was a little restricted this year as Chris and
Charles both had knee replacement surgeries a few
weeks prior to the event. However we had a
delightful trip to Browning Harbour on North
Pender Island which is one of our favourite spots.
The marina there has recently changed hands and we
are glad to report that the restaurant served us a
delicious dinner as usual.

and his partner Alina from
Auckland, New Zealand to his home in West Kelowna,
British Columbia in June. Charles and Neil had not
met up since schooldays when they were in the
school highland dancing team together with Ronnie
Auld, Alastair Milligan and Duggie Morton. Charles
brought a copy of a cine film of them dancing
which was taken by his father on the lawn outside
We did not think it fair to
ask them to put on a show in view of Charles'
recent knee replacement!
Neil and Duggie
last met in 1971 when Duggie was medical officer
in HMS ACHILLES when she visited Auckland. Some of
you may remember them playing guitar and singing
together in the school Free and Easy concerts in
the early 60s. They both still sing and play and
they had a small reunion concert in Doug's
basement! (2 performers, 3
spectators!)Photo L to R Charles, Neil ,

are sure that they will be happy to give you some
interesting insights of their own!
