"Welcome Back - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

A very warm welcome back at the start of a new school year. After the summer break, the weekly Merchistonian newsletter has returned and we can't wait to bring you all the latest Merchistonian news.

Business Breakfast - Peter Macdonald (57-62)

On Friday 28 September Peter Macdonald will be giving a presentation on Australian Doctors International and the work they carry out in Papua New Guinea.

If you would like to find out what life is like in one of the most remote places in the world, the presentation will be held at Tigerlily on George Street from 08:00 - 09:00, to register your interest or to find out more information please email us.

Newcastle Gold and Drinks

We are back for our second year of Golf followed by a meal and a night on the Town, for those with the stamina, on Friday 26th October 2018.

We are starting at The Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a very popular venue last year. It will be an earlier start of 10:00am for bacon butties and coffee, with tee off at 11:00am.

As the course takes approximately four and a half to five hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High Street for dinner, meeting at the Italian restaurant San Lorenzo at 6:00pm. The dinner is open to all Merchistonian's, so those who are unable to make the golf can come along and have a great Merchistonian night. After dinner we will make our way over to The County, also on Gosforth High Street, for further drinks and to continue the night of good company.

There may be a slight alteration to the times, but we will keep you posted on any updates.

In the meantime, book your place for golf, dinner or drinks and for those of us who can, all three

Magazine Notices

The annual Merchistonian Club magazine is going to print soon and we would welcome your notices.

If you have any births, deaths, marriages or engagements to announce, please do get in touch with Jo Tennant at jtennant@merchiston.co.uk

The deadline for submissions is 24 September 2018 and there are also opportunities available for advertisements should you wish to do so.

Merchistonian Annual Dinner

The annual Merchistonian dinner offers the chance to catch up with old friends, greet new faces and celebrate together as Merchistonians.

This year's event will be held on Friday 9 November from 7pm at La P'tite Folie Edinburgh.

What better weekend to be in Edinburgh?

Kick the weekend off with drinks at Indigo Yard and an informal Merchistonian dinner. Your dinner will take place at La P'tite Folie, a great new venue for the Merchistonian Dinner! Rally up your friends, it is about time for a get-together!

"La P'tite Folie is a lively and charmingly cosy place to enjoy great, traditional French cuisine. Located in the midst of Edinburgh's West End, this delightful venue offers authentic French dining in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere."

On Saturday 10 November Scotland will be taking on Fiji in the Autumn Internationals at Murrayfield and then finish the weekend off by watching 100 Merchiston and Merchistonian Pipers and Drummers parade together at the School on Sunday 11 November.

Thanks for Visiting Neil Johnstone (83-88)

Neil was on a trip over from Wellington, New Zealand and popped in with his family to have a look around his old school.

His father Matthew Johnstone (49-54) also attended Merchiston and Neil's wife Hayley and their children Cara & Calum had fun finding his name in the register here in the Old Library.

The old castle ruins also provided much interest and were looking splendid in this great weather we are enjoying!

Neil is visiting the UK and holidaying in Spain before heading back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy your trip Neil!

Thanks for Visiting Iain Robertson (61-66)

Having flown in from Seattle to visit family, Iain popped in to the School to see how much had changed in the 15 years since he was last here. With a fondness of the grounds, he was particularly delighted to see his favourite tree still standing strong.

Iain is a professor in Seattle and uses pictures of the School grounds in his Landscape Architecture course, so was pleased to be able to take new photos to take back with him and compare the changes that have been made.

Thanks for Visiting Derwin Wong (90-94)

Derwin was visiting from China and brought with him, his wife and daughter who were seeing the School for the first time. Derwin had a wonderful time with many memories flooding back; he particularly enjoyed visiting his old house at Chalmers East and seeing just how it had changed.

British Columbian Sailing Reunion 2018

The British Columbian Merchistonian Sailing Squadron held its 2018 reunion at Maple Bay, Vancouver Island on 28th May.

Brothers David (51-55), Chris (55-59) and Duggie Reid (58-62) on board Chris's yacht the Sandpiper were delighted to welcome back Charles Grant (57-62) who flew over from Scotland for the event. Charles' skills in the galley were sorely missed last year- his sausages with marmalade and full English breakfasts are a sailor's delight!

There is no doubt that skipper Chris has mellowed with the years. Charles and Duggie were so engrossed in conversation after meeting up on the Vancouver ferry that Duggie drove past the entrance to the rendezvous in Chemainus. The pair were several miles down the road on the way to Victoria before they realized the folly of their ways and turned around! In view of their tardiness they were expecting to be greeted by an irate skipper with threats of extra deck swabbing and stoppage of shore leave. However Chris and David were delighted and a little relieved to see them and the Sandpiper set sail immediately for Maple Bay.

Jock (Guy) Warren (57-60) and his partner Karen had sailed up from Friday Harbour in Washington State to join the group. As usual they were accompanied by Meg, their incredibly well behaved seagoing border collie.

Sadly Peter Watson was unable to make the meeting this year but we hope to see him again in 2019.
The group enjoyed reminiscing, exchanging photos and an excellent dinner at the Maple Bay Marina and the following morning Guy and Karen headed off north for several weeks of cruising and the Sandpiper headed south.

The Sandpiper's sailing programme was a little restricted this year as Chris and Charles both had knee replacement surgeries a few weeks prior to the event. However we had a delightful trip to Browning Harbour on North Pender Island which is one of our favourite spots. The marina there has recently changed hands and we are glad to report that the restaurant served us a delicious dinner as usual.

Hopefully we will meet up again next year and if any Merchistonians are interested in joining us for dinner at the Maple Bay Marina next spring please contact skipper Chris Reid via the Merchistonian office.

BC Singing and Dancing Reunion

Duggie Reid (58-62) and his wife Jenni welcomed Charles Grant (57-62) from Edinburgh and Neil Macleod (58-62) and his partner Alina from Auckland, New Zealand to his home in West Kelowna, British Columbia in June. Charles and Neil had not met up since schooldays when they were in the school highland dancing team together with Ronnie Auld, Alastair Milligan and Duggie Morton. Charles brought a copy of a cine film of them dancing which was taken by his father on the lawn outside Gibson House.

We did not think it fair to ask them to put on a show in view of Charles' recent knee replacement!

Neil and Duggie last met in 1971 when Duggie was medical officer in HMS ACHILLES when she visited Auckland. Some of you may remember them playing guitar and singing together in the school Free and Easy concerts in the early 60s. They both still sing and play and they had a small reunion concert in Doug's basement! (2 performers, 3 spectators!)

Information Morning for prospective parents and pupils

During the Information Morning, you will have a tour of the School with one of our pupils; we will be operating a normal Saturday morning so that you will gain a realistic impression of the School at work. There is also an opportunity to meet the Headmaster as well as teaching staff and pupils. You will hear some of our musicians, and there will be a short presentation about different aspects of the School. Most importantly, you will be able to speak to boys about their lives at School, and we are sure that they will be happy to give you some interesting insights of their own!

Visitors will be welcomed in the Memorial Hall from 9.45am and the presentations will begin at 10.15am. A buffet lunch will be served at the end of the morning, at which you will have a further opportunity to talk to staff.

If you would like to meet a particular member of the teaching staff please specify which subject area you would like to discuss on the registration form.  Time permitting, we will organise an informal chat with the appropriate member of staff as part of your morning's activities.

We are sure that whatever the stage of your enquiry about the School, our Information Morning will give you a further insight into life at Merchiston.

Best wishes

Dan, Merchistonian Club Secretary
