Dear Merchistonians and Friends
It is uplifting to see so many Merchistonians remaining in touch with the School and busying themselves with sporting tournaments and achievements.
This morning I welcomed Greg McCulloch (82-87) back to the School with his family. Greg moved to
Canada in 1988, and has enjoyed living there whilst working in logistics since. Back in Scotland for a wedding Greg decided to take the opportunity to show his daughters and exchange student where he spent his school years, it is fair to say
they were all very impressed despite the sudden downpour.
Yesterday evening saw Merchistonians welcoming Leavers to the Club with a game of
touch rugby. In the spirit of accommodating the imminent new members, it was decided that a 9-9 try draw at full time would go to sudden death which saw the School finish off a fun evening with a well deserved try to officially beat the Merchistonians
on the night! The onus is now on the young men to reverse this result next year when they will be eligible to play for our team. Have a look at the pictures from the match
Last Saturday MRFC competed in the Stay Strong Stu 7s Tournament. The team were in a tough group, but were winners of the first two matches. Unfortunately the team missed qualifying as best runner up to remain in the cup competition
by one try. The team made it through to the plate final… read a full report
On Sunday 19 June Chris Cowan(79-85), Roger Baird(73-78),
Nick White(83-89), Matthew Gray(79-85),
Ronnie Irving(52-58) and Gavin Thain(79-85) treated the
School Golf Team to a fine lunch at Muirfield. The boys regard the lunch at Muirfield as one of the highlights of the golfing year! The
Golf Match, which is only an incidental to the lunch, was won by the School 2 - 1… for those interested, Ronnie Irving lost to his grandson 7-6. You can see full results of the tournament
Sam Hidalgo Clyne(06-11) and Magnus Bradbury(11-13) made up a team of four who competed at The Games yesterday. Unfortunately, they were beaten in the relay race despite being strongly fancied as winners by some in the crowd.
After the Scotland v Australia match on Saturday, Hugh Fraser's (12-14) outstanding performance has, for the second time, resulted in him being selected as the
World Rugby U20 Championship Dream Team Scrum Half. A fantastic accomplishment for the young player! For those who may have missed any of Scotland's progress in the championships you can read an update from
Cameron Gray (12-14) and Hugh Fraser
We have been sent a fantastic update from Andrew Dobie (10-15) who has spent the last 9 months in Chile working for Project Trust. Andrew has become highly involved in the School that he is working at, now running 3 new after-school workshops for up to 40 children.
Andrew has two months left in Chile in which he plans to learn to cook two simple, but very tasty Chilean dishes, to learn one song as well as having a final push on improving his Spanish. I look foward to sharing more of Andrew's stories in the near future.

I would to Congratulate Duncan McLaren (12-17) who has been accepted for an RAF apprenticeship, please keep in touch to let us know how you are getting on.
To the golfers taking on the Lorettonians at Muirfield on Sunday I hope the sun is out for you and good luck to all Merchistonians playing in the championships tomorrow. I wonder if any of you are involved in any performances
during the Edinburgh Festival? If you are please let me know so that I can circulate the details. I bid you all a lovely weekend and look forward to hearing your news next week.
