"Christmas is Coming- Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

This week's newsletter is the penultimate newsletter of 2018, with Christmas and New Year fast approaching. School is out and the boys have gone home to spend time with family but the Merchistonian Club is still here sending out glad tidings to its proverbial family for another week or so!

World Record Attempt

Unfortunately Fergus Crawley (08-10) was not able to break the squatting World Record this week, he suffered a leg injury during his attempt and could not continue.

We are glad to see that he's back smiling today and he had this to say on his injury "So, I will properly dissect what happened in the coming days. But at about 3 in the morning it looks like I tore my MCL - my legs are in such a state that it can't be confirmed what grade tear it is/if it's just a bad strain. I'm glad I broke, I didn't quit, I didn't lose faith. My body simply gave up on me."

You can read his full post here. We wish Fergus a speedy recovery!

The attempt has not been a failure though with Fergus smashing his fundraising targets for the Movember Foundation with over £17,000 raised. Fergus has also been a great advocate for men's health and has been touring the country raising awareness for this worthy cause.

Merchistonian Squash

Last night saw Stewart's Melville FPs taking on our Merchistonians on the squash courts and whilst we are still awaiting the full results, we can tell you that the match ended in a hugely exciting draw!

Good fun was had by all and the Merchistonians representing the club were:
Pete Lynch (00-06), Rod Binns (85-92), Andrew Light (01-03), Duncan Hodge (86-92), Ed Murray (90-92), Craig Smith (95-03), PK Young (77-82), Dave Clark (76-81) and Ruaridh Kohler (74-80).

Remembering All

Following on from our Remembrance Service we are putting out an appeal to Merchistonians or those connected to the School who served or are serving since WW2.

Whether in national service, Malaya, Korea, Aden, Kenya, Suez, Northern Ireland, Falklands, Bosnia, Iraq, Sierra Leone or Afghanistan, we would like to look forward and gather the stories and memories of all of those who serving in the Armed Forces.

If you would like to help us in this endeavour, please do get in touch.

Professional Warrior

We are pleased to see Stafford McDowall (14-16) has signed a professional contract with the Glasgow Warriors following a string of impressive performances. He is committed to the Glasgow side until 2020, after having captained the Scotland U20 team at this year's 6 Nations and World Championships.

Updated Obituaries

We are grateful to have received such a wonderful recollection of the life of Colin Berkeley Bewsher (45-51) from the Veterinary Journal. We have updated our record here.

We have also received a note regarding the passing of Peter John Lawrence (54-59) and the notice has been posted here.

Along with a similar note regarding the passing of Thomas Alexander Inglis (40-44) which can be read here.

Merchiston Goes Viral

The School's cup winning side has gone viral following their victory last week thanks to their fantastic celebrations with the Merchistonian crowd! Check it out here.

Scottish EDGE Awards

We're delighted to see that Cameron Johnston (00-04) has picked up an award in the Wildcard category at the Scottish EDGE Awards.  Cameron on his win said "Great evening last night at the Scottish EDGE awards. Was over the moon to pick up one of the Wildcard awards for the work we are doing at Riixo. It's great to see the innovation and ideas coming out of Scotland. Thanks to everyone who helped to get me here and to everyone who organised the awards."

Simon Hannah (88-95) was judging the awards and had this to say "I'm really proud to have played a small part in #Edge13 chairing one of the judging panels. All 39 businesses that made it to the final were all incredible! Full of entrepreneurs with brilliant ideas, unrivalled energy and commitment. Scotland has a globally recognised entrepreneurial ecosystem that nurtures, challenges and supports anyone with a great idea! We should be seriously proud of that. Unfortunately not all finalists could win (at least not yet!) but the winners shared £1.8m worth of investment tonight!"

Rising up the Ranks

We are glad to hear the news from Major General Neil Marshall OBE (82-83) that he has been appointed CEO at the Forces Pension Society. You can read more on the appointment here, and read a short biography here.

Rugby Camp 2019

The 2019 Rugby Camp details have been released, the camps will be led by Roddy Deans (Director of Rugby and former Scotland u16 Head Coach) and David Blair (Assistant Director of Rugby, who played with Scotland A, Edinburgh and Sale Sharks).
