Dear Merchistonians and Friends
Today’s Business Breakfast speaker, Steven Jansch, gave us an insightful and thought-provoking presentation on the responsibilities of being a Company Director. Great networking and particularly good bacon rolls – what more can you want? Do join us at the next Business Breakfast which will take place on Friday 30 October 2015 when we will hear from Douglas Humphrey (00-06) of Loudon's about this family business in the heart of Edinburgh's financial centre.
Other upcoming events include:
Saturday 3 October - Class of 2005 Reunion
Friday 30 October - Business Breakfast
Saturday 7 November - Rugby Supporters’ Lunch – Dollar Academy
Saturday 7 November - Class of 1995 Reunion
Saturday 14 November – 54-56 60 Year Reunion
While our Edinburgh Festivals season already seems like a distant memory, some of you might be planning to organise your own! If so, Ian B Sloan (68-73), proving that there is more to accountants than meets the eye, can help. Ian is being paid to visit festivals across the country to advise on business rates relating to music festivals. Well, someone has to do it!
We are so pleased to have Jo Tennant back on her mission to create the best Club Magazine ever. Thank you for a great response to last week’s request for news, and we would love you all to play your part by sending us more!
One of our freshly minted Merchistonians, Roddy Borthwick (08-15), is making plans for a six month spell in Sydney, Australia and would love to hear from fellow Merchistonians out in Oz. If you can offer advice and ideas to Roddy, and give him the best start to his Australian adventure, please email him here.
We were all delighted and possibly slightly relieved, but not surprised I am sure, that Scotland chalked up an emphatic first win in the Rugby World Cup against the World Cup surprise package, Japan, on Wednesday.Congratulations to the Scotland team! We look forward to seeing Fraser Brown (01-07) start against the USA on Saturday following his appearance as a substitue in the Japan match, and of course hope to enjoy the first appearance of Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) during the course of a long and exciting campaign.
Alongside Duncan Hodge (86-92), Scotland’s assistant coach, one man who will play an important part in the future excellence of the Scotland rugby team is our own Roddy Deans whose very successful tenure as coach to the Under-16 Scotland rugby team has just been extended. We send our congratulations to Roddy.
Finally, we will look forward to sharing the dance floor with some of you at next Friday’s Merchiston Gala Ball. Preparations continue apace for what will undoubtedly be be a wonderful evening.
Enjoy your week!
