Dear Merchistonians and Friends
Upcoming events:While some of us were enjoying the excesses of the festive season, there was further evidence of Merchistonian grit and determination as one of the School’s current pupils heralded in the New Year by taking the title of Scottish Indoor U14 tennis champion. Congratulations from the Club on a great win.
Friday 29 January - Business Breakfast at Spartans CFC with Roger Baird (73-78)
Friday 26 February - Business Breakfast with Oliver McCaul (00-05)
Thursday 24 March - Business Breakfast with Roy Robertson (64-69)
Is it too late to wish you all a happy New Year?
Have you had time to digest the latest edition of the Club magazine? For those following the exploits of Gavin Reid (01-06), over Christmas he became one of the heroes of the Clipper Round the World Race. He spent 2 hours up a mast rescuing a crewman from another boat who had been stuck there for 9 hours! You can watch a report of his daring exploits here.
You might also like to read Alastair Campbell’s (62-67) Club Curling report for 2014-2015 which is on the Club website here.
If you haven’t received the Club magazine for 2015 it could be that we have the wrong address. Let us know your new address here and we can pop a copy in the post for you.
Just before Christmas, there were Merchistonian exploits of a different kind on the rugby field as Edinburgh played London Irish at Murrayfield. With former pupils playing for both teams, there was always going to be at least one happy Merchistonian whatever the result. However, the after-match, pitch-side photo opportunity was too good to miss. Club President Andrew McDonald (79-85) enjoyed meeting up with Magnus Bradbury (11-13), Scott Steele (10-11), Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) and the School’s Deputy Head Co-Curricular Richard Charman.
Not to be missed is this month’s special Business Breakfast which will be held at Spartans Community Football Academy. Our host will be Spartans’ Chief Executive Dougie Samuel who will be joined by School governor Roger Baird (73-78) to talk about the great work undertaken by Spartans and the ambitions of the School to replicate these initiatives. We hope to see many of you there. Email the Club office here if you would like to attend.
You are also invited to see some stunning images of Cuba from photographer Iain Clark (71-74). His latest exhibition ‘And That was the Beginning of the End of That’ will be showing at the Thistle Gallery in Glasgow from 30 January until 14 February.
For those of you expecting to receive 6 Nations Merchistonian tickets for the Scotland games against England, France and Wales, please let me know by return if you have not yet received them. Tickets for the Ireland and Italy games will go out as soon as they come into the Club office.
After all that, it is little wonder that I haven’t also mentioned the death of David Bowie this week. For some of you he may have simply been a source of fascination while for others he might have helped you survive the trials of your youth. For the aficionados, can you spot 7 of his song titles in today’s newsletter?
