Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Save the Date

Merchistonian Annual Dinner - Friday 9 November

Get the date in your diary now, to make sure you are free to join us for what will be an excellent night. This year the committee are organising a more informal dinner (blazers and school ties) at a new venue in town. We will be saving a spot at a nearby pub for pre-drinks, followed by free entry to Opal. More details to follow.

Chordiac Arrest

After completing the first part of his medical degree at Cambridge last year, Johnny Tam (13-15) moved to University College, London (UCL) to complete his training to become a doctor. Inspired by Mr Rossiter's Close Harmony Group, Johnny founded a barbershop choir of medical students, christened "Chordiac Arrest".

Now in its second year of music-making, and the last year he will lead the choir, they travelled to Edinburgh to perform on the streets and in bars. They finished their trip with a flash mob performance of the Irish folk song "Danny Boy".

I hope you all enjoy the Youtube clip of Johnny and his Group, Chordiac Arrest! You can follow the group on their Facebook page.

Thanks for Visiting …

Allan (96-97) and Grant Tait (61-66)

On a 70th birthday trip to Scotland, Allan decided to surprise his father with a visit to Merchiston. After leaving school, Grant moved to France for a year and has lived there ever since. Allan, now living in Brussels, enjoyed sharing Merchiston memories with his father.

Ian Ratazzi (59-63)

Ian and his wife were up visiting new found family members and took the opportunity to pop by the School for a tour. Having not returned for 55 years Ian enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

Simon Carpenter (97-03)

The Headmaster enjoyed a catch up with Simon this week. Simon is still working on his book which will be called "Zelda the Magnificent and her Adventures in the Park" based around a pug as the main character. Watch this space!

Edinburgh Business Breakfast - Networking Opportunity!

In the run up to Brexit, Eoghan Mackie (89-95) will talk about his organisation, Challenges Worldwide. Their latest offering is to provide support for UK business and social enterprise to access Africa.

Building on their 1,000 strong Sub-Saharan African SME client base, Challenges have been conducting market analysis, piloting and launching some exciting UK businesses in Africa over the last few months....and are keen to engage more.
You can see an example of the types of social enterprises that Challenges Worldwide support in the below image. To find out more and book your spot, click here.

Is Work Good for You?

Turning socio-economic challenges into opportunities.
A toxic work environment can be corrosive to our mental health.

The event will take place on Monday 4 June and will run from 9 am till 1.30 pm with light lunch after. Tickets are free but limited. Get your ticket here

Merchistonian Pipers and Drummers Unite

You might remember that when Merchiston pupil James was in Pringle in 2014 he wrote to the Headmaster with a wonderful idea. He wanted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War 1 at the School's Remembrance Service this year with 100 Merchiston pipers and drummers parading.

We now have 81 pipers and drummers committed to the commemoration parade. Could you be one of the remaining 19?

Help to make up the 100 by emailing me. Please read James' words here.

Calling all Cricketers

The Merchistonian v School cricket match is taking place on Friday 18 May at 5.30pm. We have new kit for the team, we just need the team! Please get in touch with Mike Legget (97-04) if you are keen to take part.

Sidney's Place

Sidney Donald (56-60) lives mainly in Folkestone, Kent, with about 4 months per year in Greece, where he will be from June to September this year - his wife is Athenian.
