Biting Ol' Blue Eyes

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

I hope you are all safe and well after the bitingly cold blizzard yesterday. As we blow on our fingers to keep the chill away, why not get some Gl├╝hwein and settle into the Christmas spirit?

For those who ordered 6 Nations tickets against England, you will have heard from Jo, explaining the next step. If you haven't or are unsure whether you have been successful, please do get in contact with her here as soon as possible.

To golf: the world-renowned Arnold Palmer gave a golf trophy to the School in 1966, due to Andrew Haddow (60-65) caddying for him on the US tour, 3 months after leaving Merchiston. You can see Andrew's Caddy USA film and the first ever UK pro-celebrity TV golf match that it led to on a new 2-hour DVD. Half the proceeds will come back to the School, so why not treat yourself and support the School at the same time? For a trailer and pricing, click here.

To tennis: Merchiston's unseeded U13 team has beaten the top two seeded schools in the UK to win at the Aegon National Schools Finals last weekend. The U15 squad were runners-up in their category. For more information, click here.

Writer and curator Mark Sutherland has been following the life of his grandfather, Halliday G Sutherland (1895-00), the Scottish doctor and tuberculosis pioneer. He's found some great stories from his time at the School; to find out more, click here.

Now on to another part of Merchiston history: sadly Norman Mair (42-47), passed away on Sunday. As an internationalist, journalist and highly-regarded authority in the world of sport, he will be much missed. The family have chosen to hold the public memorial service at the School on Tuesday 16 December at 2pm. No flowers please, but donations would be welcome to Alzheimer Scotland.

Lastly, Frank Sinatra would have been 99 today. He did things his way and lived life by his own principles. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." See you next week for my last missive of 2014!

Kind regards
