Happy New Year! - Merchistonian News

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Happy New Year to all of the Merchistonian community! We hope that you were all able to enjoy the festive period and have entered 2019 in good health.

We're looking forward to continuing to bring you Merchistonian news from around the globe and as always we would love to hear from you!

Whether it's a new arrival, an engagement or wedding, a sporting achievement or just a chance meeting of Merchistonians in an unlikely setting, every story no matter how big or small is welcomed.

Remembering All

Following on from our Remembrance Service we are putting out an appeal to Merchistonians or those connected to the School who served or are serving since WW2.

Whether in national service, Malaya, Korea, Aden, Kenya, Suez, Northern Ireland, Falklands, Bosnia, Iraq, Sierra Leone or Afghanistan, we would like to look forward and gather the stories and memories of all of those who serving in the Armed Forces.

If you would like to help us in this endeavour, please do get in touch.

The Merchistonian Club Magazine 2018

Hopefully there are many of you who have received our Annual Club Magazine in the post by now, if you have not received your copy and would like to request one, please do email us to update your contact details.

Coverstar features in The Scotsman

Speaking of our Club Magazine, this year's cover star Andy Hadden (93-00) has featured in The Scotsman this week talking about Wavegarden Scotland. You can read the full piece here

A Look Ahead

We're happy to say that the 2019 Merchistonian calendar is filling up and this year will bring more of the great events seen in the past.

From Business Breakfasts to School Reunions (the Classes of '09, '99 and '67-70 have already begun preparations).

We will be holding the ever popular Pre-Calcutta Cup Dinner in March before Scotland look to beat England at Twickenham for the first time since 1983.

We have your usual sporting calendar starting to take shape and if you're interested in taking part in any of the range of sports we have then please do get in touch and we can direct you to the relevant Sports Secretary.
If you're in to Cricket, Curling, Fishing, Fives, Golf, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Skiing or Squash then we have you covered!

We will be putting together plans for the big Annual Dinner and this along with all of the other events will be publicised when more details are available so watch this space!

Sadly Stuart Riddle (76-81) has been in touch to let us know that his father Iain Riddell (48-53) passed away this week.

Iain was extremely well known in Merchistonian circles having also been a parent and governor at the school. He served on the Board for 17 years and was a very regular presence on the rugby touchline.

We pass on our condolences to Stuart and the rest of Iain's family at this time.

Scots in China

Merchiston International School will be the subject in Neil Oliver's latest episode of Scots in China which explores the role of Scots in the reinvention of China.

The episode is set to air on 14 January and will be available here shortly after broadcast.

That's all for this week's newsletter.

Thank you for all of the support offered in 2018 and for continuing to read our news this year, we really are looking forward to building on all of the success we have had so far to bring you bigger and better things in 2019!

As always, we hope you have enjoyed reading and if you have any stories of your own, please do get in touch!

Best wishes

Dan, Merchistonian Club Secretary
