"Happy New Year"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Happy New Year!

Merchistonian Affinity Discount

We are pleased to announce the launch of your new discount scheme!  The Club has negotiated a range of deals for you to enjoy so please click here to see what's on offer.  More companies are joining all the time, so keep checking back.

Business Breakfast

This month we have Simon Hannah (88-95) from Flavourly.com coming to speak to us about "Diversifying for the next generation", find out more here.  We hope to see you on Friday 26 January at Rabble, 55A Frederick Street, Edinburgh.  Email us to let us know if you can make it.

Watch a great interview here with Tom Sole (09-14) as he prepares to join Scotland for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2019 qualifiers.

Thank You for Visiting

Tork Shaw (92-99) came to visit us for a tour just before Christmas and he could remember his way around the school so well! He now lives in Seattle where he works as a video game designer for Amazon Game Studios and also writes the occasional RPG adventure book for Paizo Publishing.

Festive Catch-Up

Paul Sukhum (76-80) and Pongsakorn Thiengtham (77-80) enjoyed meeting Merchiston pupils and their families in Bangkok during the festive season. Paul and Pongsakorn wish Kavin and Chonnapat all the very best at Merchiston.

Double Dose

Congratulations to Alastair Edwards (02-07) on the birth of his twin girls: Maisie and Lucy who were born on 20 December. We are sure Alastair will be kept on his toes!

Intake of '57 Reunion

Peter Macdonald (57-62) is taking the lead role in organising a 60+ reunion for the Intake of '57.  If you would like to get in touch with Peter, let us know.
"It's been suggested that we have a get-together after sixty years and "settle some of our old scores", tell lots of tall stories and wonder where all the years have gone. My suggested date is 29/30 September 2018"

Engineering His Career

Congratulations to Ben Flett (08-13) who has recently obtained an MSc in Coastal Engineering from the University of Southampton. He is interested in pursuing a career in civil engineering, and in particular water engineering. Ben is keen to secure work experience or a permanent position.

Any advice or opportunities available for Ben will be greatly appreciated.

Beard for Bairns

Richard Macmillan (81-87) is growing a beard and raising funds for the Archie Foundation in the process - a fantastic cause.

"Any spare pounds all appreciated so please follow the below link to sponsor if you can. Thanks in advance and all the best for 2018. I'm certainly planning to tick off a few bucket list items this year and I hope you are too."

You can sponsor Richard here.

Merchistonian Generations

Current pupils Hamish and Tristan with their grandfather David Murray Low (50-55) who is wearing his Merchistonian tie!

Man of the Match

Congratulations to Finlay Richardson (12-17), who was 1st Man of the Match for 2018 for Edinburgh Academicals.

Sail Into Summer

"I have been Hon Treasurer of St Mary's Loch Sailing Club for the last 20-something years and am still daft enough to race a Laser most weekends in the summer. St Mary's is a typical Scottish valley loch, with all the winds that that implies, in the Borders between Selkirk and Moffat. We have a very active, family-friendly club with opportunities for all sorts of dinghy sailing: pottering, training and racing. We would be delighted to welcome Merchistonians of all ages, past and present, to enjoy the loch with us."  Ian Malcolm (66-71)

Thank you for your kind offer Ian, and also, we congratulate you on receiving the RYA Community Award at the Association's AGM last November. These awards recognise the contributions to the sport of volunteers.  Please click here if you would like to contact Ian about any of the above.

Mercer Shining Bright

The Headmaster was reading The Daily Telegraph and was pleased to notice that it had been a 'Good Weekend' for Zach Mercer (13-15).

Fireworks for the Happy Couple

The New Year brought your Club Secretary, Gill, a romantic proposal from her partner, Keith Macaulay, and she said yes!  Congratulations to them!  With a love for the outdoors they are hoping to have a lovely, rustic barn wedding somewhere in the next year or two.

All of the School's rugby fixtures against Dollar will be at Heriot Watt University tomorrow. Click here for more detail.

Best wishes

Louise, Development Assistant
Gill, Merchistonian Club Secretary
