"Inspiration, perspiration, aspiration"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Business Breakfast

Thanks to Simon Hannah (88-95) for this morning's business breakfast topic "Diversifying for the next generation".  A fabulous turnout as you can see from below. Thank you too to our hosts Rabble.

Edward Murray (90-92) joined the breakfast; Ed has set up a new company, Confscribe, which specialises in providing writers to cover business events and create summaries of the various presentations and keynote speeches. Event organisers can then distribute this post-conference content to delegates and clients and use it for a range of marketing and PR activities.

As an added bonus, Ed has kindly given us his services today and we will be emailing his write-up of Simon's excellent and engaging presentation next week.

Magnificent for Maggie's

Stuart Riddle (76-81) and family have raised over £6,000 from the 2017 ceilidh for the Maggie's Centre in Edinburgh, bringing their grand total, from the three events they have run, to £30,600.

L-R is Jamie McGregor (75-81); Stuart; Graeme Lobban (75-80) and Craig Swan (76-81). Their Justgiving page is still live if anyone would like to donate.

Fond Memories of Bonnie Scotland

"Up-and-coming rugby talent Zach Mercer (13-15), who was named in England's 6 Nations squad, will always have a soft spot for Scotland given that he spent a decade of his life north of the border.

Having played for GHA for eight years and Merchiston Castle School for two as well as turning out for Scotland under-16s he still has plenty of friends and ex-team mates in Glasgow and Edinburgh." [Scrum] Read the full story here.

A Message from The School Chaplain

Dear Merchistonians
Every year, during the period of Lent, I offer pupils, staff, parents, and Merchistonians a daily reading and thought, emailed to them each morning.  It is purely my own thoughts, but about 120 folks have signed up each year.  This year, Lent begins on 14 February and I will be looking at the book of Psalms.  If you would like to be included in my email distribution list, please let me know by emailing me at chaplain@merchiston.co.uk.  Best wishes, Rev Nick Blair

Sporting a Sporran

The Merchiston Pipe Band has brand new leather sporrans for sale; they feature a silver 'Ready Ay Ready' crest.  They are £40 and you can get yours by emailing Housemother, Clare Nugent here

Peace Pipes

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War 1.
Current Chalmers East pupil James, has come up with a very interesting idea to help the School mark the end of the national commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 in November. James, a keen piper from the age of 10,  would like to amass a group of 100 pipers and drummers, past/present pupils and friends of Merchiston, to play and parade on Remembrance Sunday 2018. "I thought it would be a fitting way to remember all those who fought and died.  We still have the pipes my great-great-Uncle Duncan McNaughton played while serving with a Scottish Regiment in the War. If this happens, I plan to have the pipes re-furbished and would proudly play them on that day".

While plans are still at a very early stage and logistics need to be worked out, we are reaching out to see if there are any pipers or drummers out there who might wish to be kept in touch with the planning with a view to participating. If interested, please contact us

Best wishes
