What a fantastic veiw over Merchiston! The snow has melted around campus but we can still see it on the Pentlands. Thanks to Richard Nicholls (90-97)
at Swift Films
for sending this in to us.
Dander for Doddie
Ian Fraser (96-02)
is heading to the Italy v Scotland match and is helping to organise a mass walk on Saturday 17 March from the Piazza del Popolo to the stadium to mark the end of fundraising during the 6 Nations.
"As a supporter of Doddie5 Foundation I have been taking part in Doddie Gump, an online exercise challenge open until the end of the 6 Nations, raising more for Doddie5 Foundation for MND research. As the 6 Nations comes to a close in Rome for Scotland, and as part of the super Saturday, a march to the Stadio Olympico from the Piazza del Popolo will take place for Doddie Gump. I will be taking part and extend an invitation to members of The Merchistonian Club travelling to Rome to join in!
The walk will be gathering from 10:30 local time in the Piazza del Popolo, moving on to the ground en masse at around 11:00. Doddie style head bands are the only prerequisite and I look forward to seeing anyone who would like to take part. For anyone still able to sign up to Doddie Gump challenge it's not too late, all miles and donations are gratefully received. Go to @MNDoddie5
to join in."
7s and the Main Event
The Merchistonian Football Club has a busy and exciting schedule this season, and with new additions to the committee, including Hugh Fraser (12-14)
as Club Captain and Freddie Main (CR 01-present)
as Director of Rugby, it will be the start of great things to come. Please click here
to register your interest and availability for the various 7s tournaments and the big match against Accies! There will be training in preparation for these fixtures, and if you simply want to come down and get involved without playing contact rugby, there's always the option of joining in with the touch games on a Monday evening on the Astro at school. Singapore Rep Update - Benjamin Dunnett (96-02)
Do you live in Singapore, are you stopping by for a visit, or do you need some general advice? Email Benjamin
to meet up:
After leaving Merchiston, Benjamin studied English at Oxford University where he also received a full Blue for rugby league. He graduated in 2006 before taking a job in the City as a broker with Guy Carpenter Ltd, the financial risk and reinsurance advisory arm of Marsh and McLennan Group. He now lives in Singapore and is happily married to his wife Beth with whom he has two daughters. He still secretly hopes for a boy to send to Merchiston!
Merchistonian Car Badge
Annie Henderson, a friend of Russell Paterson (70-75),
has been in touch to say she is looking for a Merchiston enamel car badge for Russell. He had one for many years but when his car was sold the badge was accidentally left on. Annie says that it has always been a source of real loss to him and she would dearly like to replace the car badge for him as a surprise. Does anyone have one of these badges that they could give, sell, or loan so a copy could be made, to Annie? Please get in touch
if you can help!
Ian Suren (34-47) Checks In
It was great to hear from Ian who has been living in Australia since taking early retirement in 1968.
"Although getting a bit long in the tooth, I'm keeping fit and still play 9-holes twice a week with our local club. Oddly enough, I'm the oldest (89 in April). As I once said to one of your predecessors, life at school during the war wasn't a particularly pleasant time. Numbers were down, and one of the houses (think it was Rogerson West
) was closed to provide accommodation for servicemen."

Merchistonian Golf Club v Edinburgh Academical Golf Club - 17 February 2018
"The annual match v the Accies is the "season opener" for most people in terms of competitive golf. An excellent day as always, we were lucky with the weather which was dry with a testing south westerly breeze. We were more than equal to the task and managed to secure a 5.5 - 2.5 win (2-2 in the afternoon). A special mention to Logan Mair (80-86)
who had made the long trip north to play, and managed to secure two points. All in all, a very positive performance that bodes well for the Wayfarers and the Halford Hewitt (we had four members of the HH team in the team on Saturday)". Rob Forman (89-94),
7s in the City
Matthew Clark (07-13), Donald Crawford (06-11)
and Cameron Coutts (07-14)

As well as all the matches, they will have a beer tent offering live music and DJs throughout the day, a street food village, gin and prosecco gardens, pop-up shops, other entertainment, and the event will conclude with an after-party to round off the day. To get your Early Bird Ticket click here
