Dear Merchistonians and Friends
Friday 29 January - Business Breakfast at Spartans CFC with Roger Baird (73-78)
Friday 26 February - Business Breakfast with Oliver McCaul (00-05)
Thursday 24 March - Business Breakfast with Roy Robertson (64-69)
Two flies are playing football in a saucer. One says to the other, “Make an effort. We’re playing in the cup tomorrow.” Tommy Tiernan’s joke was voted one of the best in last year’s Fringe. Maybe the boys joining the Merchiston Comedy Players in its inaugural season can do better? Maybe comedy was your forte in the ‘Free and Easy’?
For Ian Lawson (62-67), singing was his ‘turn’ in the ‘Free and Easy’. You are invited to see him reprise his role as the Duke of Plaza Toro in the Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s presentation of The Gondoliers in the King’s Theatre from 8 to 12 March. More details and booking here.
If G&S is not your thing, then how about supporting the boys of Bwani Junction in the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow tomorrow? As part of Celtic Connections, they’ll be performing their cover of Paul Simon’s Graceland with some of the original South African musicians. It sounded great on the radio the other day and you might still be able to get tickets here.
Next, we need your help on the careers front. This year’s School Careers Convention will take place on Tuesday 1 March 4-6pm in Memorial Hall. Would your company like the opportunity to meet some of our talented young men? If you think you can help or your company would like to take a stand at the event then please contact Dr Dale Cartwright, Head of Careers, here.
We also have 3 young Merchistonians looking for opportunities over the summer to tie in with university courses. Can you offer an Edinburgh-based internship in hospitality or can you help with an internship with either Deutsche Bank or JP Morgan for an America-based Merchistonian? Our third Merchistonian is looking for a summer placement in Human Rights or Corporate and Construction law. Please email the Club office and we can put you in touch.
Congratulations go to another young Merchistonian Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) on being selected for the Scotland 6 Nations squad. There’ll be plenty of Merchistonian support in the stands.
But just to see how many of you get to the end of the newsletter, we have 4 returned tickets (at GBP42 each) for the Italy v Scotland game in Rome. Please email the Club office if you are interested in buying them.
Leave out weekend for some. Maybe a Burns celebration for you? We hope you’ll not forget your auld acquaintances and look back on the old School fondly.
