"Getting Down to Business- Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

With the cold weather closing in, we hope this week's newsletter full of Merchistonian stories, upcoming events and other news hot off the press will be enough to keep you warm!

Business Breakfast

On Friday 30 November Matthew Gray (79-85) and Daryll Morrow (08-10) will be presenting updates on the Merchistonian Business Network and providing a short-term and long-term vision for the Network.

Covering as many sectors/industries as possible, as well as global contacts to provide local knowledge, the Network aims to be able to provide Merchistonians with opportunities to access advice, expertise and experience in any field they are interested in.

The event will be held at Tigerlily on George Street, Edinburgh from 8.00am to 9.15am.

Please email if you would like to come along, and if you have any dietary requirements.

Breakfast will be bacon or egg rolls served with tea and coffee. The cost is £5, taken on the day.

Remembrance Service

Julie Birdsall has been in touch this week to share a photo from the Remembrance Service. "My sons Morgan (10-15) and Andrew White (11-16) travelled up from their universities in Guildford and Liverpool and Angus Hinton (07-17) flew up from Bath. Tom Bisset (08-15) came down from Dundee. "

It's great to see that no matter how far you go, the Merchistonian community is still a strong connection.

Neil Armstrong (82-87) was also in touch to share this photo and his story of the day.

"I wanted to write and thank all involved for a fantastic day on Sunday at the Remembrance Service. My family and I were there to see my son Fraser play in the 100 pipers parade. I think he was the youngest current pupil to play which was an honour for both him and us.

James Armstrong (53-56) my father, John Jackson (65-69) my Father in Law, myself and my son Fraser who is currently in Pringle are all pictured. 3 generations and both Grandparents- quite a feat!"

Just a Sports Quiz

A merry band of Merchistonians attended the 'Just a Sports Quiz' at Murrayfield on Friday evening to help raise money and awareness for MND. Doddie Weir was on top form as always and the team #readyayready came 15th overall, which was very respectable!

The Ocean at the Top of the World

In the summer of 2018, Dr Helen Czerski spent two months on an icebreaker close to the North Pole, one of forty researchers on a huge expedition to study Arctic weather. In this talk, Helen will discuss what they found, why it matters, and the future of the Arctic region. There will be stories of ice, bears and ships, and the science that made it all worthwhile…

St George's School welcomes Dr Helen Czerski to share her experiences as a research physicist, oceanographer, TV and radio presenter, author and bubble enthusiast.

Her first book, Storm in a Teacup, was published in the UK in November 2016 and has been translated into 14 languages. Her second book, Bubbles, has been published this month.

This event, to be held on 6 December is open to the Merchistonian community and the general public.

Ticket price £5.00 per ticket and seats are limited so purchase your ticket/s now online through Eventbrite

Merchiston 'Fun Weekend'

The School's 'Fun Weekend' is an excellent opportunity for boys to get a taste of School life and to meet current and prospective pupils of similar ages.

The weekend offers two options to experience Merchiston: a Fun Day, for boys who are considering a day place at Merchiston or a Fun Sleepover, for boys who are considering boarding. For younger boys (aged 6-9 years) the morning will include sporting activities, arts and crafts, and a magic show.  For older boys (aged 10-12 years) there is the opportunity to join classes with current pupils.
For more details click here or contact, Megan White, External Relations Assistant on 0131 312 2236.

That's all for this week's newsletter.

As always, we hope you have enjoyed reading and if you have any stories of your own, please do get in touch!

Best wishes
