Relief, celebration, anticipation?

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

With the end of term just about here, tonight sees the first of two Prizegiving ceremonies and the UVI Leavers Ball. Tomorrow we welcome 81 new Merchistonians to the Club and I am sure you would want to join me in wishing them well for their future beyond the Castle walls. What are you memories of this day - relief, celebration, anticipation?

On Saturday 20 June, Merchistonian's Magnificent Seven, led by joint Top Guns, Richard Macmillan (81-87) and George Russell (05-07) did the double in the annual Merchistonian Shooting match held at Cluny Clays, defeating the School in both the Clays and the .22 Rifle match. Read a full report here
.

Merchistonians were not quite so successful at The Games on Friday, being well beaten in the relay race despite being strongly fancied as winners by some in the crowd.  In the end the School won by 30 metres, so not even close!  There were other brilliant performances and two new Games Records, including 25.45m in the Discus beating the previous record distance of 25.00m set in 1979, and 6.26m in the U17 Long Jump breaking the Games Record of 6.10m set in 1972. We would love to hear from those whose records have just been broken!

Gavin Reid (01-06) - will be setting sail later in the year as a competitor in the Clipper Round the World race, aboard the Mission Performance boat. Gavin will begin the first leg at St Katherine's Dock, London then stop off at numerous locations around the world including Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Sydney, Qingdao and Londonderry to name just a few.  Gavin would love to meet up with Merchistonians around the world, and we would love to feature a photographic record of all these meetings, so let me know where you are and we can make a plan. As well as enduring the rigours of competitive sailing in all conditions, with some far flung Merchistonian socialising thrown in, Gavin is also aiming to raise funds for UNICEF.

Tickets for the Merchiston Gala Ball are selling very well. If you would like to join us for a wonderful evening at the Sheraton Grand Hotel on Friday 2 October, please book now. We would love to welcome individual bookings as well as bookings for tables of 10.

May I send you a reminder of last week's request to Merchistonians living in London?!  Our VI Form leaver is still looking for affordable accommodation there from August to October, so if you are able to assist please let me know - we would really appreciate it!

I am just back from our latest monthly Business Breakfast at 181 Delicatessen - probably one of the most successful yet with around 30 Merchistonians, current parents and guests enjoying bacon rolls and fantastic coffee courtesy of Mike Billinghurst (85-90). We were also delighted to be joined by three boys from the Lower VI who enjoyed a bumper breakfast while practising their networking skills!

With the temperature more like February than June here in Scotland, how apt that today is the anniversary of the introduction in 1824 of the Kelvin Scale, the brainchild of British physicist Lord William Thomson Kelvin. Absolutely fascinating (anyone?).

Have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Jane
