'A new term, a new turn'

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Welcome to the first Merchistonian newsletter of the 2016/17 term. 103 new pupils were welcomed into the School at this morning's assembly which was followed by the handshaking ceremony.

Thanks to your generous donations, the most important news of the summer is the completion of the new artificial pitch at the School. This is the second phase of the on-going sports and leisure development project.  If you are in the area this Sunday please do join us by the athletic arena for the grand opening of the Merchiston Astro from 11.45am.

Whilst the pupils were away over the summer months it gave many of you the excuse to visit the School and I enjoyed meeting you all, so thank you to everyone who has taken the time to have a look around.  Read about the visits here.

We saw Neil Armstrong (81-86), Colin Pratt (82-88) and Tom Harvey (80-85) with their families at The Big Activity Weekend, an opportunity for their sons to 'live a day in the life of Merchiston'.

It was great to hear that Fergus Crawley (10-14) has continued on to achieve bronze in the GPC Powerlifting European Championships, in Finland in June. Congratulations Fergus!

For golfers, if you are interested in attending the Autumn Golf meeting on Saturday 8 October please sign up here.

The Merchistonian Annual Dinner is fast approaching. The Class of '59 has already booked their table, have you booked yours? If not, click here.

Stuart Dickson (92-98) has been in touch as he has recently started his own business, Body Performance Therapy.  For anyone recovering from an injury or looking to get a performance advantage Stuart offers a wide range of services from one-off relaxation massages to tailored rehabilitation and treatment plans.

Your Edinburgh Business Breakfasts will recommence on Friday 30 September (details to follow).  For each breakfast I am looking for a Merchistonian to share the knowledge, experience or present their business.  This is a great chance to promote your business or enlighten members on any current issues that you feel will be of use to others.  Please reply to this email to book your presentation slot.

Finally, thank you to all who have responded to my request for magazine updates and articles.  If anyone has any announcements that you would like to share please email me.  I would love to hear of graduations, engagements, births and weddings.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Kind regards,

Gill
