"The Year in Review - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

Welcome to the final Merchistonian News of 2018, we are signing off with a recap of the big news through the last year in the Merchistonian Community.

Firstly though, we have a quick update on last week's Merchistonians vs Stewart's Melville FPs squash match, we thank Andy Duff (76-79) for organising and he played a special match against Harvey Kane (07-14). Judging by the smiles on their faces we're happy to say the rivalry was confined to just their match!

We now go month-by-month, through what was a great year for the Merchistonian Community and bring you some of the best stories from the Club.

The year started with some great news for Merchistonians! It marked the launch of the Affinity Discount and we now have over 30 companies onboard, giving great discounts across a wide range of stores. Check out the full list here.

January also saw our Club Secretay Gill Imrie get engaged to her partner Keith Macaulay and we'll hear more on how they are getting on later on in the list!

We were delighted in February when David Murray (87-92) agreed a deal seeing Murray Capital become the Title Sponsor of the Merchistonian Club.

His generous sponsorship deal will run for three years and will support the operation of the Club, the creation of the 'Merchistonian Business Network', kits for the sports teams and hosting events.

March saw our Merchistonians take on current pupils at the School in a Clay and Rifle Day at Cluny Clays in Fife.

The Merchistonians took the Clay match narrowly by 17 clays with Iain Brechin (79-84) leading the way with 41/50. The Merchistonians, for the first time in a few years, also took the Rifle match winning narrowly again by 24 points!

Fittingly, March also saw the 'March of the 1000 Headbands' with Ian Fraser (96-02) helping to organise a gathering of rugby fans to march to the stadium before the Italy v Scotland match.

The event was held as part of the Doddie Gump which supports the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.

The Merchistonian Golf Club captained by Alastair Milligan (58-63) travelled to Deal in April to take part in in the Halford Hewitt tournament but a tough draw meant they had an early exit against Harrow. The team are looking forward to the challenge of next year's tournament.

Sticking with sport, Merchistonian FC were taking part in the North Berwick 7s in April and led by Cammy Gray (13-15) started well scoring 6 unanswered tries against Dunbar but faced a tough task against the home side, losing on the last play of the match.

Another month, another day out for Merchistonians FC and this time it was the Leith 7s tournament. The team won the Bowl final against Leith RFC 42-7 to end a great day for them.

May saw the first of our reunions with the Class of '66, '67, '68, '69 and '70 - 50 year event.
Thanks to Barclay Low (63-68), Colin Crabbe (64-69), Graeme Robertson (63-67) and David Broadfoot (65-70) for taking lead roles in organising this get-together. Take a look at the photo album here

With some great weather there were more sporting events in June with the Golf Club hosting The Captain's Weekend. Well done to Sandy Corstorphine (59-64) and David Hutchison (73-76) who won the knockout foursomes at Muirfield.

There was also the small matter of the oldest ongoing rugby fixture in the world… unfortunately Merchistonian FC lost out 48-24 in the Accies vs Merchistonians match but a great time was had by all involved including the great support!

We saw an incredible result in July with Chris Sole (07-12) helping Scotland Cricket to victory against England with over 60 Merchiston pupils there to witness this historic win

Well done also to Daryll Morrow (08-10) and Luke Morrow (07-09) who were one of the winners at the 'Young EDGE' awards.

The Golf Club gathered for its annual autumn meeting at Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society in August and with over 30 attendees it was a great event. Golf Secretary Bob Forman (89-94) provided the report.

August also saw a new arrival, with Club Secretary Gill Imrie giving birth to a baby girl.
Matilda Rose Macaulay was born 10 August 2018 weighing 7lb 4oz.

In September we saw another couple of reunions with the Class of '88 back at School, organised by Graham Gibson (83-88) followed by the Intake of '57 having their 60 year reunion organised wonderfully by Peter Macdonald (57-62).

September also saw Tom Diggle (08-16)  representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Federation Cup and finished 3rd overall.

Merchistonian David Will (70-76) published a book in October, inspired by the war experiences of his father Jock Will (34-38).

Merchiston International School (MIS) in Shenzhen was also officially opened in October, and you can check out a video tour from the first day here

November was a very busy month for Merchistonians with many events happening in a short space of time.

We were pleased to invite back the Class of 08 for their 10 year reunion organised by Kit Abram (03-08) and Russell Weir (02-08).

The Merchistonian Annual Dinner was hosted at La P'tite Folie and during the evening Club President Matt Gray (79-85) presented the Merchistonian Award to Nick Blair on behalf of the 178 fallen Merchistonians of WW1.

The School held two significant Remembrance Services, with the first being held at the School's original site at Napier University where all of those who fell in WW1 would have attended.

On the centenary of the end of WW1 the School held a poignant service which was followed by a 'Parade of 100 Pipers and Drummers' which saw current pupils and Merchistonians march and a full video of the march can be seen here

November also saw the Scottish Men's Curling team in action at the European Curling Championships held in Tallinn, Estonia where Merchistonians Hammy McMillan (05-10) and Grant Hardie (05-10) helped the team beat Sweden 9-5 in the final to secure the Gold Medal.

The final month saw a great success for Merchiston, beating St Aloysius' College in the Scottish Schools Cup Final at Murrayfield. To re-live the match you can watch highlights here.

Most recently, we had another Merchistonian winner at the Scottish EDGE awards with Cameron Johnston (00-04) picking up an award in the Wildcard Category.

That's all for this YEAR's newsletter.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the newsletter with great stories and wonderful photos. It is significant that we are able to put out a weekly newsletter and it's testament to the great things Merchistonians are accomplishing across the globe all year round!

With Christmas and New Year fast approaching, we at the Merchistonian Club are now off for some much needed rest and relaxation. We look forward to next year and will see you back here in the second week of January!

As always, we hope you have enjoyed reading and if you have any stories of your own, please do get in touch over the holidays!

Best wishes

Dan, Merchistonian Club Secretary
