February is a time to begin anew. With the heralding of the new month, we can expect brighter weather, further sporting and academic successes and me, your new, acting, Club Secretary. I've had the pleasure of
meeting a few of you in my first week, but there are plenty more faces to put to names. Whilst the lovely Jo enjoys her time away, I trust you'll all join me in wishing her the best of luck.
Our weekend opens with the Public Schools Old Boys' Lawn Tennis Association's (PSOBLTA) coming up to play against Merchiston's first team. Membership is open to boys of all independent schools, so do let us know if you are involved.
Rugby: This week, both the Under 16 A's and 1XV are travelling down to Newcastle RGS to begin the sevens season. U16s are playing the Saturday tournament and 1XV on Sunday; if you are in the area, do come down and show your vociferous support.
The 1XV have their first game kicking off at 11.20. Scores will be posted
On the subject of sevens, this weekend James Johnstone (02-08) and Russell Weir (02-08) are again representing Scotland in the next leg of the HSBC
Sevens World Series in Wellington, New Zealand. The team lost narrowly both to Argentina (17-14) and Canada (17-12) and drew with the USA (19-19) with James managing to get on the score sheet against Canada. This means they will now play Spain
in the Bowl quarter final. If you make it along to any of the Series, do send in your photos. Updates can be seen on the Scottish Rugby Twitter feed
The MRFC have released their fixture list for the rest of the season. Viewable
here. Looks to be a great season - please put these in your diaries, whether it be to play or to support.
The Rugby Revival dinner is now looming large on the calendar, so be sure to book your place
if you'd like to be there to witness the celebration post match. The MRFC committee are working enormously hard to make this is a success, so please show your support by booking your seat, getting a table together, or considering offering up a prize for
the dinner's auction and raffle. Any questions about this, direct it to Oli at
A reminder that The Merchistonian Club's AGM will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 4 March 2014 in the Old Library at School. All Merchistonians are welcome, so if you do wish to attend, please notify me
here or give me a call on 0131 312 2262 and I will ensure you are sent the relevant documentation in advance.
That is everything from me this week, gentlemen. I look forward to hearing from you in the future and do get in touch with any queries you may have. Until next week!
