"Ready for Business - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

In this week's newsletter we have great speeches taking place at the School, a round-up of Merchistonian events and exciting news about the Merchistonian Business Network.

60 Year Reunion

We were delighted to host Peter Macdonald (57-62) and the Intake of '57 for their 60 year reunion.
It was fascinating to hear some of the stories and history from when these Merchistonians were at the School.

The group started the day at the School mixing with current pupils for lunch and a tour before celebrating in the evening with drinks and dinner.

A full gallery of the day can be found here.

Merchistonian Business Network

There was a meeting this week to develop the Merchistonian Business Network and we're delighted to say we will be moving ahead with some bright ideas for a mentoring network.

Keep your eyes peeled for more updates!

If you are interested in being a mentor for Merchistonians, please do get in touch.

24 Hours of Power

Today the School was delighted to welcome back Fergus Crawley (10-14) who was here to talk at Sixth Form assembly about a subject close to his heart.

Fergus spoke about mental health and the importance of talking more about issues that affect us all.

Having experienced himself how difficult it can be, Fergus is raising money and awareness for men's health charity Movember Foundation by attempting to break the World Record for the most squatted in 24 hours.

The current record stands at 460,000kg and Fergus aims to complete at least 7,666 squats at 60kg over 24 hours. His attempt will start on 12 December this year and you can read more on his fundraising efforts and contribute towards his target here.

Chance meetings and coincidences

At Saturday's Open Morning the Headmaster was delighted to welcome Hamish and his mum Ailsa to have a look around the School.

Hamish is the grandson of the late Dr George Aitken (57-62) and his mum Ailsa had often been entertained by fond memories of the School recounted by George. Unknown to Ailsa and Hamish, on Saturday the School also played host to the 1957 reunion year group the very same year George joined the School.

Hamish and Aisla are pictured together with one of George's old school friend Charles Grant (57-62) who visited George several times out in Canada where George emigrated to after interning in General Surgery, General Medicine and Pathology at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow.

On the same weekend as the Ryder Cup victory for Europe it seemed to complete the set of coincidences…due to illness during his time at Merchiston, George was unable to play Rugby and so set up and became the inaugural captain of the School's Golf Team.

Merchistonian Memorabilia

We were delighted to have a set of Merchistonian memorabilia donated to us this week. The buttons and badge are decorated with the School badge and motto 'Ready ay Ready' and were part of the CCF uniform dating back over 50 years.

2018 Merchistonian Annual Dinner

This event offers the chance to catch up with old friends, greet new faces and celebrate together as Merchistonians.

Friday 9 November from 7.00pm at La P'tite Folie Edinburgh.

Kick the weekend off with drinks at Indigo Yard and an informal Merchistonian dinner. Rally up your friends, it is about time for a get-together!

"La P'tite Folie is a lively and charmingly cosy place to enjoy great, traditional French cuisine. Located in the midst of Edinburgh's West End, this delightful venue offers authentic French dining in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere."

You can get your tickets here.

Newcastle Golf and Drinks

Join us on Friday 26 October 2018 back for our second year of Golf followed by a meal and a night on the Town, for those with the stamina.

We are starting at The Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a very popular venue last year. It will be an earlier start of 10.00am for bacon butties and coffee, with tee off at 11.00am.

As the course takes approximately four and a half to five hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High Street for dinner, meeting at the Italian restaurant San Lorenzo at 6.00pm. The dinner is open to all Merchistonians, so those who are unable to make the golf can come along and have a great Merchistonian night.

Book your place for golf, dinner or drinks and for those of us who can, all three.

Merchiston 'Fun Weekend'

The School's 'Fun Weekend' is an excellent opportunity for boys to get a taste of School life and to meet current and prospective pupils of similar ages.

The weekend of 24/25 November offers two options to experience Merchiston: a Fun Day, for boys who are considering a day place at Merchiston or a Fun Sleepover, for boys who are considering boarding. For younger boys (aged 6-9 years) the morning will include sporting activities, arts and crafts, and a magic show.  For older boys (aged 10-12 years) there is the opportunity to join classes with current pupils.

For more details click here or contact, Megan White, External Relations Assistant on 0131 312 2236.

Inspire Alpine

Ricky Munday will be coming to deliver inspirational talks to our Junior School pupils and our 6th Form next Wednesday 10 October. Ricky climbed Everest earlier this year and has completed many other significant challenges, including the Marathon des Sables. Resilience will be one of the main themes through the speech.

The evening talk from 7.00-8.00pm is open to Merchistonians, with coffee in the Old Library until 8.30pm.

If you wish to attend please let me know.
