"Broken Records - Merchistonian News"

Dear Merchistonians and Friends

In this week's newsletter we have plenty of news to bring you from right on our doorstep. Along with that, we have details of upcoming events, don't forget to sign up for the Merchistonian Annual Dinner below!

Three Generations

Current pupil Donald was at his first harvest festival at Merchiston this week. His father, Angus Greene (78-84) who left the school 34 years ago and his grandfather John Greene (46-50) who left the school 68 years ago were with him, reflecting on their days in the rugby team and choir.

There have been many changes at Merchiston through the years, but it's good to know there will always be something in common for many generations of Merchistonians.

Thanks for visiting!

We were pleased to welcome back Max Grass (09-11) to Merchiston this week. Max was visiting Edinburgh from Germany with his girlfriend Anna and wanted to reconnect with the School and relive some very happy memories.

Merchistonian Write Up

Fergus Crawley (10-14)
is attempting the Guinness World Record for the most weight squatted in 24 hours on his 23rd birthday (12 December). He will need to squat 460,000kg, which is equivalent to over 11 empty Boeing 737s and works out at 320kg a minute. He will do so with 7,666 squats at 60kg, which will take place at LIFT Gym in Edinburgh.

His attempt is in partnership with the Movember Foundation, with a focus on male mental health. He is aiming to raise upwards of £15,000 as well as raise as much awareness as possible for the issues that the Movember Foundation aims to tackle. Fergus has had his own challenges with mental health issues, but is set on encouraging as many men as he can to avoid the same mistake he did, and talk about their challenges. Be a man of more words.

Fergus came into Merchiston to speak to the Sixth Form on the notion of success, and how it can be distorted by numerous factors. He talked the boys through his personal experience, and encouraged them all to be vocal about any mental challenges that they may face.

Fergus is hoping to be more involved with the school during the run up to his attempt when he is up in Edinburgh, and has made himself open to contact from the boys if they feel like they want to talk about anything related to mental health, training, or his personal experience after graduating from Merchiston.

You can donate to Fergus's attempt here

Fergus is proudly sponsored by Murray Capital

You can get your tickets here.

Newcastle Golf and Drinks

Join us on Friday 26 October 2018 back for our second year of Golf followed by a meal and a night on the Town, for those with the stamina.

We are starting at The Northumberland Golf Club, again, as this proved a very popular venue last year. It will be an earlier start of 10.00am for bacon butties and coffee, with tee off at 11.00am.

As the course takes approximately four and a half to five hours to get around, we will have a few drinks at the Golf Club and then move on to Gosforth High Street for dinner, meeting at the Italian restaurant San Lorenzo at 6.00pm. The dinner is open to all Merchistonians, so those who are unable to make the golf can come along and have a great Merchistonian night.

Book your place for golf, dinner or drinks and for those of us who can, all three.

Merchiston Memorabilia

We were thankful to receive a donation this week of Merchiston Memorabilia. James Douglas Brown (1903-06) was a great athlete in his school days playing for the 1XV in rugby and the 1XI in cricket. Pictured are also the trophies he received for athletics and we are grateful to James' grandson Doug who has donated these back to the School where they will be displayed in The Old Library.

Rugby Camp 2019

The 2019 Rugby Camp details have been released, the camps will be led by Roddy Deans (Director of Rugby and former Scotland U16 Head Coach) and David Blair (Assistant Director of Rugby, who played with Scotland A, Edinburgh and Sale Sharks).

That's all for this week's newsletter, thanks for reading.

We will take a short break now but will be back in a couple weeks, in the meantime please do get in touch with your stories!

Best wishes
