Dear Merchistonians and Friends
Happy Hallowe'en! Autumn has now given way to a bitterly cold, wet and - wait, what's that? It's 18C? No, I have no idea what's going on either. This record-breaking warmth is going nowhere fast, so keep those woollen hats and scarves in the drawer for a while longer.
Long may this weather reign, as the Annual Dinner is now a mere three weeks away. November is so rarely a month in which to have a spectacular reunion with old friends; do make sure you come along. With spaces filling up left and right, make sure you book here soon!
To rugby: keep an eye out tonight for the Guinness Pro12 Edinburgh v. Leinster
game, to be held in Dublin at 7.35pm. Not only is Edinburgh regular and Merchistonian extraordinaire Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (06-11) starting, but Magnus Bradbury (11-13) will also be making his senior debut! I'm sure you'll join me in wishing them all the best; more information can be found here.
Today I have also had the pleasure of taking a descendent of Mr John Gibson (1850-1856), Merchiston's second Headmaster, around the School for the first time. Mrs. Pauline Gibson was absolutely delighted by the grounds, the welcoming nature of the teachers and, especially, the boys' behaviour. Check out our new website for pictures of all Merchistonians and relatives who pop by to visit.
Earlier today we had our Edinburgh Business Breakfast at Gilson Gray. We saw a phenomenal turnout as both Merchistonians and parents alike gathered round to hear Employment Lawyer Graham Millar talk about the 'Horrors of Social Media'. If you would like to follow up with Graham and talk about your business' social media policy - or perhaps lack thereof - he is happy do a special deal for you. Those interested should get in touch with him here.
Lastly, Harry Houdini, celebrated illusionist and stunt performer, died on this day in 1926. Houdini's mental and physical strength meant he could suspend people's disbelief and make them believe that, truly, anything was possible. Are you reaching for the stars, too?
Enjoy your weekend!
