Dear Merchistonians and Friends
Still shivering in Edinburgh, but as ever we are warmed by the achievements of Merchistonians everywhere!
Congratulations to the Revd Professor Norman Drummond CBE FRSE (65-70) who recently launched his third book
'Step Back': finding the way forward in life
which explains why stepping back from the busyness of life is essential in ensuring you're living to the full, in work, at home and in everything else you do.
This week, four Merchistonians were finding their way forward, in magnificent style, on the rugby pitch:
Fraser J Brown (01-07) played a part in the stunning display of rugby which saw
Glasgow Warriors win the
Guinness Pro12 Rugby championship in Belfast on Saturday.
Patrick Kelly (10-14) and Magnus Bradbury (11-13) are currently taking part in the
Junior Rugby World Championships in Italy in the Under 20 Scotland team. Although drawn in a very tough Pool, both were excited about facing the All Blacks in a daunting first game. We will follow the team's progress with
Scott Steele (10-11) was named as
London Irish Young Player of the Season, following his strong performances throughout the year, including a memorable try against Edinburgh in the European Challenge Cup.
From the oval ball to the Gala Ball, you can now
book tickets for the Merchiston Gala Ball on Friday 2 October. Not only will this kick-off the fundraising for the wonderful new sport and leisure developments planned for Merchiston, but will also celebrate the
150th anniversary of the Merchistonian Club. We would love to see you there!
For those of you wondering how your classmates of 20 years ago have taken the world by storm,
sign up for the Class of '95 reunion which will take place at
The New Club in Edinburgh on Saturday 7 November. Contact
Rory Corstorphine or me for further information.
Finally, with talk of referenda in the air, how many of you will remember that it was 40 years ago tomorrow that
UK voters embraced Europe by backing the UK's continued membership of the European Economic Community, with a large majority. I wonder how many will step back from this next time round?!
