Spectacular Street Parade in Rio
Christopher Whalen (99-01) is touring Brazil in February with the samba drummers of Carnaval Transatlântico.
"Parading in Oxford's Cowley Road Carnival in July 2013. I'm second from the left."
The band is playing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this February and has been officially registered to play in a spectacular street parade in Lapa the weekend before the carnival starts, and the day before they fly home from a two-week tour (22 February). It's a 'once in a lifetime' achievement and the band needs to raise £3,000+ to cover the costs which is an opportunity not to be missed!
Any offers of support would be welcome. Read the full story to find out more….
Christopher and the band are thrilled to be part of this vibrant parade in Rio. Shortly after leaving Oxford University in 2010, Christopher joined Sol Samba fulfilling a long-held ambition to play in a samba band. This ambition started when he saw the London School of Samba at the Edinburgh Fringe when he was wee lad. It was through his contacts at Sol Samba that the opportunity arose to rehearse with another band called Nova Guarda, based in Birmingham. Since 2011, Christopher has been rehearsing once a month with other drummers from all over the midlands.
Christopher is covering his own expenses but there are about 45 members of the band, so the sponsorship is approximately £70 each. The band is fundraising to support their costs for this parade and all donations would make such a difference. All contributions should be paid into a central fund (details below) which would support the whole band and enable them to take advantage of this amazing adventure
