Breakfasts Are Back

A big thank you to Vincent Johnstone (86-88) for kicking off the first business breakfast of the decade. It was great to see everyone along in the Old Library this morning to hear from Vincent who talked about his media journey which started at Merchiston.

Fantastic to see some new faces along, and for David Spawforth to make the journey up to join us, David was Vincent's Headmaster when he was at Merchiston and enjoyed being back at School today.

Beal Farm Shoot

Peter Wright (82-89) and Rod Smith (84-49) hosted a Merchistonian shoot of Pheasant & Partridge at Beal Farm in Berwick Upon Tweed on 25 January 2020 and intend to host another shoot soon. Peter said:

"Any available Merchistonians are welcome to join us on a first come first served basis. If you are interested, please email me on petercwright@btinternet.com or give me a call on 07860 67 57 33.

Team Mouat

Congratulations to Hammy McMillan (04-10) and Grant Hardie (05-10), who, as part of Team Mouat have won the Scottish Curling Men's Championship 2020. Team Mouat will now represent Scotland on home soil at the World Men's Curling Championships in Glasgow from 28 March to 5 April.

International Debut

Congratulations to Patrick Kelly (10-14) who made his international 7s debut at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event in New Zealand last weekend. Good luck this weekend when you play Australia, USA and Samoa.  

Patrick was named DHL Man of Steel after the first match in New Zealand. All teams will be playing at the Melrose Sevens.

2020 Golf Club Spring Meeting

The Spring Meeting of the Club is to be held at Gullane Golf Club No3 on Sunday 29 March 2020. The schedule is as follows:

10.30 am - Arrival - bacon rolls optional
10.48 am - Tee Off

Half A Century On

Current Chalmers West Housemaster Mr Ogilvie-Jones enjoyed meeting Bill Donaldson (44-49) who was Chalmers West Housemaster in 1970.

Jumping To Victory

Well done to Henry Clarkson (13-17) who has this month become the BUCS Indoor Athletics Triple Jump Champion. Fantastic from Henry following on from his second place in the Scottish Athletics Indoor Championships. The triple jumper, in his final year at Loughborough Uni, recorded 14.98m to win the title in Sheffield.

Henry was the Captain of Athletics at Merchiston in 2018.

Home From Home

Giorgi Maziashvili (15-17) popped in for a visit last week. He was delighted to catch up with Mrs Darling and Torin. Giorgi was Torin's prefect in Pringle.

Hotshots Required

A reminder that the shooting section have their annual clay pigeon and rifle match vs School on Saturday 9 May commencing at Cluny Clays from 9.30 am. Anyone wishing to join them for the day and evening's shenanigans should contact shooting secretary Richard Macmillan (81-87) by emailing richard@forbeslawson.co.uk or call 07889178715. Newcastle Golf And Drinks

James Angus (81-85), John Bruce (76-81) and Andrew Taylor (98-03) are again helping to organise a Newcastle golf day followed by drinks in the evening on Friday 20 March at Northumberland Golf Club. U20's Win

Well done to Rufus McLean (08-18), Matthew Currie (12-19) and Kieran Watt (15-17) who helped lead Scotland U20's to a 20-29 win against Italy U20's last weekend.

 

Special shout out to Rufus for his tough year with injuries and for making a stirring comeback diving for this try for Scotland U20's last weekend.

Dave And Logan's Countryside Walks

After a 38-year career in banking David Ford (74-79) has recently retired. David now has a small YouTube Channel where he publishes a video of himself and his dog, Logan, on various countryside walks. A very refreshing watch and interesting to see what they come across on their adventures.

Man Of The Match

Well done to Jamie Dobie (12-19) who was Man of the Match on his first start for Glasgow. Jamie was joint top of the charts for defenders beaten in round 12 with 8 defenders beaten.

Merchiston Sevens

Come back to watch some great rugby at the Merchiston Sevens on Thursday 12  and Sunday 15 March 2020.

Cricket Secretary

Alistair Evans (90-97) has recently stepped down as the Merchistonian Cricket Secretary and the committee are looking for someone else to take up the role and to help organise an annual match v School. If you are interested in finding out more please get in touch.
